Kashmir quake documentary for Korean fest
Indo-Asian News Service
New Delhi, July 12 (IANS) A documentary film on the relief operations that followed the devastating 2005 earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir will be among the 100 works to be screened at a festival in Seoul.
"Operation Imdad", a 30-minute documentary, will be shown at the EBS International Documentary Festival that started July 10 and will go on till July 16.
"The documentary details how the armed forces swung into action literally moments after the (Oct 6, 2005) quake and coordinated the relief efforts of various government and private agencies," its director P.N. Khera, a retired Indian Army colonel, told IANS before leaving for Seoul.
"We have juxtaposed images of the devastation in both parts of Kashmir with visuals of the relief effort, and interviews with the victims and those involved with the relief effort," Khera, who was specially invited by the festival's organisers, added.
"I feel specially honoured to have been invited as I will be able to speak on the expertise India has gained over the years in disaster management and how we can share this with our neighbours and with the world at large," Khera maintained.
The external affairs ministry that commissioned the documentary entered it for the festival, whose theme this year is "Prospering Asia, Reconciliation and Co-existence".
EBS is South Korea's public television service that was launched in 2004.
Khera served the army for 30 years, 17 of them in the directorate of public relations. Initially posted as the army PRO, he later rose to be joint director (public relations), before taking voluntary retirement in 1992.
He then served as chief executive of PTI-TV before starting his own production house in 1997. He has since produced three serials - "Journey to Success" (10 episodes), "Asia Defence" (six episodes) and "Tainaat" (17 episodes) dealing with various aspects of the armed forces and national security that were telecast on Doordarshan.
His documentaries on the same issues include "Whose Army is it Anyway?", "Are Human Rights for Terrorists Only?", "Kashmir Today", "A New Dawn", "The Indomitable" and "Pillars of Peace".
Khera, who was awarded the Vishist Seva Medal for distinguished service and the army chief's commendation card, is also the editor of Asian Defence News International that provides news analyses in English, Hindi and Urdu to 40 newspapers.
