Shakira stars in World Cup closing ceremony
DPA
Berlin, July 10 (DPA) Shakira thrilled the sellout crowd at the Olympic stadium here in a brief closing ceremony before the start of the World Cup final between Italy and France Sunday.
The Colombian singer sang her smash hit "Hips Don't Lie" in a duet with hip-hop star Wyclef Jean.
Veteran group Il Divo kicked off the 11-minute ceremony with a rendition of the official World Cup anthem "The Time of Our Lives".
Doug Jack, who also orchestrated the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, choreographed the ceremony.
Among the spectators were French President Jacques Chirac, Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, South African President Thabo Mbeki and former US president Bill Clinton.
Around 400 actors were masquerading as a wild horde of fans to help increase the atmosphere in the stadium.
The stadium, which has a capacity of 72,000, was sold out months ago. The final is beamed around the world to a television audience of more than one billion.
