'South Park' creators owe success to late planning
Indo-Asian News Service
London, July 19 (IANS) Matt Stone and Trey Parker, creators of
the "South Park" cartoon show, say that they owe the success of
their controversial series to last-minute
planning.
According to contactmusic.com, they believe that their ideas
would have not been allowed if TV lawyers had time to think
about their controversial storylines. The two have
managed to upset religious groups, celebrities and family
groups. Their episodes featured Jesus, Saddam Hussein and Tom
Cruise.
They were surprised when their TV network Comedy Central allowed
their controversial Scientology episode, which poked at Cruise's
sexuality, to be shown.
Stone says: "We kind of avoided
doing the episode for a long time because of Scientology's
reputation for taking you to court. And when we ran the idea
past the lawyers, they said, 'That's cool.'"
Parker adds: "Since we do a show basically the week of, it was
really the Wednesday before that show aired that we said, 'Let's
do a Scientology show.' The lawyers didn't have time to start
talking."
