Sarath Kumar new president of South
Indian artistes' body

Chennai, July 30 (IANS) Former DMK MP and actor Sarath Kumar was
Sunday elected as the president of the South Indian Film
Artistes' Association, replacing
Vijayakanth, who was heading the body since 2000.
Elections to the association are held once in three years.
With two-third of its members said to be in the AIADMK camp and
supporters of former chief minister J. Jayalalitha - who comes
from the film fraternity, Kumar's election to
the body was expected.
Kumar resigned from the Rajya Sabha in April to join the AIADMK.
Popular stars, including Vijayakanth, Vikram, Nepolean,
Radharavi, Srikanth, Revathy, Parthiban and AIADMK legislator
and actor S.V. Shekher, were among those who
cast their votes.
Speaking to reporters after casting his vote, Vijayakanth said:
"I am against mixing politics with films. People should stand
united irrespective of the party they belong to and
fight for the welfare of the industry."
He expressed his confidence in Kumar, who said, "Our attempt
will be to ensure democratic functioning of the association".

Chennai, July 31 (IANS) Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J.
Jayalalitha's supporters, including actor Sarath Kumar, have won
the posts of office- bearers of the South Indian Film Artistes'
Association (SIFAA) in the elections held Sunday night.
Sarath Kumar, a former DMK MP who quit the party to join the
AIADMK in April, was elected president, replacing Vijayakanth,
who had headed the body from 2000.
The contest to the film body also saw Manorama, a popular
artiste of the past and known to be close to Jayalalitha, being
elected as vice-president. The second vice-president's post went
to Vijaykumar.
Elections to the SIFAA, known as Thennindiya Nadigar Sangam, are
held once in three years. It has 1,992 members. In Sunday's
voting, 1,898 valid votes were cast, of which 576 were postal
votes.
With two-thirds of its members said to be in the AIADMK camp and
as supporters of Jayalalitha - who comes from the film
fraternity -, Sarath Kumar's election to the body was expected.
Former AIADMK MLA Radha Ravi, a powerful supporter of the AIADMK
supremo, was elected general secretary.
Popular stars, including Vijayakanth, Vikram, Napolean,
Radharavi, Srikanth, Revathy, Parthiban and AIADMK legislator
and actor S.V. Shekher, were among those who cast their votes.
Speaking to reporters after casting his vote, Vijayakanth said:
"I am against mixing politics with films. People should stand
united irrespective of the party they belong to and fight for
the welfare of the industry."
Vijayakanth is now an elected MLA and has a political outfit of
his own called the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK).
After he was elected, Kumar said: "Our attempt will be to ensure
democratic functioning of the association.".
