Irish-born novelist John Banville wins Booker Prize
DPA
London, Oct 11 (DPA) Irish-born writer John Banville has won the prestigious Booker Prize for his "The Sea", a novel about grief, memory and love recollected.
Banville, 59, was awarded $88,000 (55,000 pounds) for what the prize jury called "beautifully crafted prose".
A former literary editor of The Irish Times, Banville was chosen from a short list in a fiercely contested final round, chief judge John Sutherland said at the awards dinner at Guildhall in London Monday.
It was second time lucky for Banville, who was short-listed in 1989 for "The Book of Evidence" but lost out to Kazuo Ishiguro's "The Remains of the Day".
This time, he won out over Ishiguro's short-listed "Never Let Me Go".
"This is a great surprise and a great pleasure." Banville said accepting the prize.
He said any of the short-listed books would have been a worthy winner, adding: "I do say to my colleagues: Just hang in there, it will come. I hung around for many years."
