Looking for 'Mr Right' on Karva Chauth
By Anil Sharma, Indo-Asian News Service
Jaipur, Oct 19 (IANS): 'Karva Chauth' an auspicious day for married Hindu women across north India, has taken on a new meaning with unmarried girls observing the fast for finding their Mr Right.
On Karva Chauth, married women undertake a daylong fast and offer prayers seeking the well-being and longevity of their husbands.
However, many unmarried girls in Jaipur have started observing the fast as they think this would help them find a suitable match.
They feel if this day can prolong the life of husbands, why can't the prayers help them find their dream husbands. Priyanka Sharma, a third year arts students, said, "I have been observing the Karva Chauth fast since the last two years. My sister-in-law initiated me into it."
Though she admitted that her marriage depends on the discretion of her parents but by keeping the fast, she would appease god and find a good boy.
A desire to find a dream husband is making most girls follow this age-old tradition. Ritambara Joshi, a third-year engineering student, said she observed the day because her mother had done the same.
However, there are several Generation X girls who think that merely imitating traditions won't help find Mr Right. Shivangi Agarwal, a college student said, "This day carries no significance for me as it is a day meant only for married women."
"If you claim to be a follower of Indian traditions, then first understand them at least," added Shivangi. Arti Singh, another college going girl opined, "By observing the fast, these girls are only imitating the typical Bollywood heroines."
