Young crowd being sought for next Pravasi Divas
Indo-Asian News Service
Toronto, Oct 14 (IANS) The Indian government plans to attract a younger crowd of non-resident Indians (NRIs) for the 4th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas scheduled to be held in Hyderabad Jan 7-9, 2006.
The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) is calling on youth abroad to join in the cultural event on the inaugural evening under the theme "Dialogue of Cultures" to interact with artistes from India.
The Indian high commission in Ottawa, Canada, has sent out an advisory detailing the qualifications needed for this.
Those participating should be 25 years or younger, the ministry says, and each group that decides to participate must not exceed six members, and they have to pay their way to and from India and come several days ahead of the programme to rehearse. But their local hospitality costs will be borne by the government of India.
In recent years, Indian culture and a hybrid mix of Western and Indian hip-hop genres are the in thing among both young and even older generations, not just among Indo-Canadians but also among the larger mainstream.
Keeping that in mind, the MOIA says the group should depict Indian culture as well as local cultural forms and should come prepared with presenting its own item, which will then be choreographed into a 75-minute programme by a local choreographer.
Canada has some of the highest concentrations of Indians anywhere in the world living in British Columbia and Ontario provinces.
