PMK, DPI doublespeak on Khushboo controversy
Indo-Asian News Service
Chennai, Oct 4 (IANS) Following criticism of cultural policing, two political parties in Tamil Nadu changed their stance Tuesday and disassociated themselves from a campaign against film actress Khushboo's controversial comments on pre-marital sex.
PMK founder S. Ramadoss and Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) general secretary T. Thirumavalavan said their parties "had no role in the series of protests against Khushboo".
The two Dravidian parties were earlier seen as leading the protests and criticising Khushboo.
The actress was criticised for "denigrating Tamil women" as she had written in a magazine that "pre-martial sex is okay provided precautions are taken against HIV and other diseases".
At a joint press conference, Ramadoss and Thirumavalavan said the protests were spontaneous and they were at a loss to understand why their parties were being dragged into the controversy.
Thirumavalavan, however, maintained: "Khushboo's remarks were injurious to public order and deserved to be condemned by one and all."
