A tribute to quake victims through sculpture
Indo-Asian News Service
Bhubaneswar, Oct 10 (IANS) Well-known sand artist Sudarsan Patnaik of Orissa has found a novel way of paying homage to the victims of the Saturday quake, which killed thousands in northern India and Pakistan - creating a sculpture on sand.
The sculpture at Puri city, 56 km from here, made with five tonnes of sand, took Patnaik and his students about five hours to finish.
It depicts collapsed buildings and debris with an appeal "Help the quake victims."
"During disasters, we need to extend our help to the victims in all possible ways. That may be by praying to god or sending relief," Patnaik said.
"The motive behind this sculpture is to bring out a strong campaign for relief and rehabilitation."
Patnaik, who has participated in nearly 30 international competitions, recently won a prize at the international sand sculpting championship at Berlin.
