"Happy New Year, America! Welcome to the world of children in India" will be the greeting on the morning of Jan 1 in Colorado, where children are going to wake up to watch "Animation of India" by US-based artist Manick Sorcar.

Starting at 6 a.m., the 1 hour 45 minute programme will be telecast by the Colorado stations of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), the non-commercial television.

"'Animation of India' was selected for the early morning telecast as Saturday and holiday mornings are considered to be prime time for children's programmes. This is when the kids get up and stay glued in front of their favourite cartoons, starting from dawn to mid-morning," Sorcar told IANS over phone from Denver.

Sorcar, a lighting design engineer by profession, is the son of illustrious Bengali magician P.C. Sorcar and brother of P.C. Sorcar Junior.

"Animation of India" contains five of Sorcar's award-winning classics -- "Deepa and Rupa: A Fairy Tale from India", "The Sage and the Mouse", "The Woodcutter's Daughter", "Sniff" and "Rule of Twenty-one".

While "Deepa and Rupa", which won the Gold Plaque at the 26th Chicago International Film Festival, is based on a popular story from Bengal's "Thakumar Jhooli" (Grandmother Tales), "The Sage and the Mouse" (Gold Medal, 36th International Film Festival of New York} and "The Woodcutter's Daughter" (Finalist, 40th Annual New York Festival) are from the fables of the Panchatantra.

"Sniff" (C.I.N.E. Golden Eagle, Washington D.C.) and "Rule of Twenty-one" (Bronze Plaque, 51st Columbus International Film Festival) are based on two popular nonsense poems by satirist Sukumar Ray in "Aabol Tabol".

"Deepa and Rupa" is India's first film that mixed animation with live action. All works are produced in English, except for "Sniff" (based on "Gandhabichar"), and "Rule of Twenty-one" (based on "Ekushe-Aine"), which are in Bengali with English subtitles.

These animations are popular at the elementary schools where Sorcar is frequently invited to make a presentation and conduct workshops on animation with the students.
