Indo-Asian News Service

New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS) Three groups rocked music freaks here as they lined up for the final show of the head bangers ball - Rocktoberfest - here.

The concert took place at the British Council Saturday night with Descant, Superfuzz Bigmuff and Nakshatra the performers.

Descent began the proceedings with some superb heavy metal tracks. The five-member group that came together in December 2003, sang numbers of Ozzy Osbourne, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Pink Floyd, Van Halen and others.

Superfuzz Bigmuff was the next band to take the stage. Judged second in the IIT Delhi Festival rock competition this year, the trio, led by singer and guitarist Sanchal Malhar, sang mostly grunge numbers.

But the star performers were Nakshatra.

Started in 1998, the six-member band led by brothers from Delhi - Sumit (lead guitarist) and Amit (drummer) - have featured twice in the Great Indian Rock (GIR) album. Assam guy Greg (vocals), Francis of Shillong (guitars) and the duo from Kolkata - Arpan (bass) and Depanjan (keyboards) completed the line-up.

"We were inspired by groups like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Ugly Kid Joe, Deep Purple, Rush, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd," said Amit.

The group, meaning constellation, began their show with Pink Floyd's "The Wall". They also sang a medley of Rush, including "Spirit of the Radio", besides songs of Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden and others.

They also played two of their own numbers - "Break Away" and "Never Ended".

"We started playing in various college gigs," Amit, a third generation music teacher in his family, told IANS.

Now with its own blend of music, Nakshatra is on its way to release its debut album.

"Our album - 'N..tra' - will be released soon. Tracks like 'Quest', 'Tragedy' and 'Break Away' have already been recorded in our own studio, Amplify," he said.

The group featured twice in the GIR album - 2003 and 2004.
