Court orders inquiry into TV 'laughter' show

Ahmedabad, June 29 (IANS) A metropolitan court has ordered a police inquiry against a popular television comedy show and its participants for making allegedly derogatory remarks against the lower castes in an episode.

The court on Wednesday directed an inquiry into the "Great Indian Laughter Challenge" show, STAR One channel, the organisers of the programme, the anchors and two Pakistani artistes who reportedly made the derogatory remarks.
Police of the Rakhial area of the city have been asked to probe the complaint filed by a voluntary organisation, Aadar Seva Samiti.
The complaint was filed by Harshad Solanki, a member of the Valmiki community (Scheduled Castes).
"The complaint was against derogatory remarks against the Scheduled Castes in the episode aired on June 16. Two Pakistani artists Ali Hassan and Irfan Mallik passed the remarks during the show. The episode was repeatedly telecast," said advocate Piyush Jadugar.
The same court had, however, on Tuesday dismissed a similar application filed by one Jitendra Solanki, the president of Aadar Seva Samiti, citing the reason that the complainant didn't "belong" to the caste that was referred to in the show.
Jitendra belongs to the Vankar community of weavers.
The next day, the court admitted the petition by a person belonging to the caste reportedly insulted in the show.
