Mukherjee, 83, has been suffering from chronic renal failure for the past few months and was admitted to Lilavati Hospital Saturday at 3.30 p.m. for pneumonia and sepsis.

According to hospital officials, the reputed director was kept on ventilator since his admission and he is responding to treatment. However, doctors describe his condition is serious.

"Particularly because of his age his condition could be said to be 'serious'. But he is responding to treatment," a hospital spokesperson said.

Mukherjee was undergoing dialysis four times a week at the hospital for the last few months.

The maverick director's oeuvre has a worthwhile collection - he made classics like "Anari" (1959), "Anuradha" (1960), "Anand" (1970), "Abhimaan" (1973) and "Golmaal" (1979). "Anuradha" starring Balraj Sahni and Leela Naidu won the president's gold medal.

Apart from making films, he also served as a chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and National Film Development Corporation.

He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and on Jan 26, 2001, he was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan for his contribution to Indian Cinema.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee's health serious but stable
Mumbai, June 7 (IANS) Veteran Bollywood director and Dadasaheb Phalke Award recipient Hrishikesh Mukherjee, hospitalised Saturday, continues to be on ventilator as his condition remains serious yet stable.

Mukherjee, 83, who has been suffering from chronic renal failure for the past many months, was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital here for pneumonia and sepsis.

According to hospital officials he is still in the intensive care unit.

"There has been no development as such - positive or negative - in Mukherjee's health," hospital spokesperson Vaishali Rajpare told IANS.

"He is responding to treatment and his health remains serious yet stable," added Rajpare.

The hospital officials cited the Padma Bhushan awardee's advanced age as a serious impediment to his recovery and no comments were available as to when Mukherjee, fondly called Hrishida, could be discharged.

The veteran director, who created masterpieces like "Anand", "Abhimaan" and "Anuradha" and boosted the careers of several stars including Rajesh Khanna ("Anand", "Bawarchi"), Amitabh Bachchan ("Abhimaan", "Mili", "Anand") and Jaya Bhaduri ("Guddi", "Mili", "Bawarchi"), is ignored by the filmdom. Hardly any Bollywood personality visited him at the hospital.

Mukherjee, who, sadly, never won a National Award despite delivering several classics, has been undergoing dialysis four times a week at the hospital for the past many years.

Mumbai, June 12 (IANS) More than a week after veteran filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee was hospitalised for pneumonia and sepsis, his condition remains serious, doctors said Monday.

The 83-year-old Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner's health remains stable but serious and the doctors are "trying their best to bring him back to normal" so that he can be discharged, officials at the Lilavati Hospital said.

The director, known for his humorous-philosophical takes on the middle class, has been suffering from chronic renal failure and was admitted to the hospital June 3.

"He is still undergoing dialysis and his vital parameters are all stable. Yet it is too early to say when he will be back to normal," a hospital spokesperson said.
