Films on women's issues top at Iranian film fest

Tehran, Jan 16 (IANS) Ten films on women's issues have been selected by critics at Iran's first Female Filmmakers Festival, in which director Dariush Mehrjuii's "Leila" (1997) was voted the best film.

Fifty-two Iranian critics selected the films, produced since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, in the five-day festival which began in the Persian Gulf island of Kish Jan 14, Mehr News Agency reported.
Bahram Beizaii's "Bashu, the Little Stranger" (1987) and Rakhshan Bani-Etemad's "Gilaneh" (2004) finished second and third.
Award winners will be given golden and silver lilies. The lily has been the symbol of woman in Iranian culture since ancient times.
The festival is organised by the House of Iranian Women Artistes.
