'Kabhi Alvidaa...' set for monsoon release
By Subhash K. Jha, Indo-Asian News Service

Mumbai, April 4 (IANS) The wait for this year's most eagerly anticipated film "Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna" is over as director Karan Johar has decided to release it in August instead of during Diwali.

As Amitabh Bachchan, who plays an important role in the film, is back under the arc lights after a surgery, the remaining portion of "Kabhi Alvidaa..." ("KANK") is expected to be complete shortly and Johar has zeroed in on the date for release.

"KANK" is to hit the screens on either Aug 4 or 11.

"It can be either of the two Fridays," Johar, who is currently neck-deep in post-production and recovering from a severe bout of laryngitis, told IANS.

This would be the first Johar film that won't be released on Diwali.

"We can't afford any delays. The film has gone way beyond budget. I can't reveal the figure. But it's astronomical. And then on top of that, there are all these rumours about what I have made.

"People expect this Karan Johar film to be a shocker. To some extent they will be shocked. I have gone into a different area of cinema and human relationships this time," said Johar.

"It takes me back to a state of complete honesty. I have done exactly what I want to do in 'KANK' without caring about box office results. To that extent 'KANK' is my most uncompromising film since 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'."

The Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preita Zinta and Abhishek Bachchan quadrangle, shot almost entirely in New York, goes into areas that might jolt audiences.

"How much so we shall soon know," said Johar as he awaits his D-day.
