Lata Mangeshkar's jewellery collection raises quake relief funds

London, Nov 27 (IANS) Jewellery designed by melody queen Lata Mangeshkar has raised funds in an auction at Christie's here for victims of the recent earthquake in India and Pakistan. 

Mangeshkar, 76, said part of the 1,05,000 pounds raised at the auction would be donated for earthquake relief and the children's charity, Pratham. 

The jewellery collection, called "Swaranjali", is designed by her and has been crafted by Adora, India's leading diamond export company.

Speaking to newsmen, she said she received a large collection of jewellery from her father, Dinanath Mangeshkar, and used the collection to create new designs. These were then crafted by Adora under her signature.

Mangeshkar hoped for normalisation of relations between India and Pakistan, and hoped the earthquake victims would receive the relief they needed.

"I feel that normalisation of relations (between India and Pakistan) will happen, but I can't say when", she said.

The event at Christie's was attended by leading individuals of Indian origin, including Lord Swaraj Paul.

The five pieces auctioned were:

* The Rose, which has 598 diamonds weighing 4.77 carats and gold weighing 27.876 grams fetched 30,000 pounds;

* A diamond and ruby Eternity set went for 26,000 pounds;

* A diamond suite, with a unique blend of marquise-cut, pear-shaped diamonds weighing 19.63 carats in the necklace and 11.61 carats in the earrings, was sold for 28,000 pounds;

* A diamond and emerald suite went for 19,000 pounds; 

* A diamond and blue topaz pendant fetched 2,600 pounds.
