Kuala Lumpur, Feb 16 (DPA) Malaysia has decided to reduce its imports of foreign films from China, India and Indonesia to encourage locally made movies, a former minister said Thursday.

Former information minister Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir said that while the demand for foreign films was still high, the government wanted to encourage movies with local flavour.
Fadzir, who stepped down from his post Wednesday, told the official Bernama agency: "It's not that there will be a total ban, but the quantity will be reduced and these films will be replaced with locally made Chinese and Tamil films."
He added that the government would enter into joint ventures with foreign filmmakers to fulfil the demand from Malaysians who still liked foreign films.
Bollywood movies from India as well as Chinese drama serials are very popular in Malaysia, which has a large ethnic Chinese and Indian minority alongside its majority ethnic Malay population.
