Mexican filmmaker's retrospective in Delhi

New Delhi, March 14 (IANS) Well-known Mexican filmmaker Arturo Ripstein will be visiting India for a retrospective of his movies to be shown here from March 18.

Ripstein and his wife, Paz Alicia Garciadiego who has scripted many of his films, will arrive here March 24 to close the Mexican Film Festival dedicated to their cinematographic production and titled "Arturo Ripstein in India" at the India Habitat Centre here. 

During their 10-day visit, the celebrity couple will also visit Mumbai where some of Ripstein's films will be screened at the 8th Annual International Film Festival. 

They are also scheduled to attend conferences and discussions dedicated to the study and analysis of film-making organised at the universities of Mumbai and Kolkata. 

Ripstein began his cinematographic career at the age of 19 as an assistant to director Luis Buñuel in the film "El Angel Exterminador" (1962). 

His first production was "Tiempo De Morir" in 1965, written by Gabriel García Marquez and Carlos Fuentes. After this there was no looking back for Ripstein who carried the literary works of important Latin American writers to the theatre. 

Among other distinctions, Ripstein has been awarded the National Award of the Arts of Mexico for his work. 

His wife, Alicia, has contributed in writing scripts for several of his films including "The Ruination Of Men", "The Beginning And The End", "No One Writes To The Colonel", "Such Is Life" and "The Realm of Fortune.

The celebrity couple's visit is part of the Cultural Exchange programme signed between India and Mexico in October 2005 that seeks to promote the bonds of communication and understanding between the two countries
