Moulin Rouge dancers mesmerise Delhi
Indo-Asian News Service
New Delhi, Dec 5 (IANS) The gorgeous dancers, the multi-hued rhinestones, feathers, sequins and their brilliant costumes - the Moulin Rouge fantasy, the legendary Parisian cabaret - rocked and enthralled a select crowd in the capital.
The Durbar Hall at Taj Palace Hotel was transformed into a Moulin Rouge supper theatre, complete with the illustrious windmill (Moulin in French) and the glittering red Bal du Moulin Rouge sign Sunday evening which coincided with the launch of Laurent Perrier's champagne and a robust menu created by Moulin Rouge chef Laurent Tarridec.
The general manager of Taj Palace promised an evening of gastronomic advances and the gorgeous fantasy of Moulin Rouge, the famous Parisian cabaret that is performed at the tip of Paris' red-light district, known as Rue de Pigalle.
Music and dance lovers eager to discover the truth behind Moulin Rouge attended the candle light banquet complete with whistles to blow at the raunchy dance numbers of the cancan girls.
Sakshi Dureja, hostess of the evening and press relations manager, said: "The show continues to maintain the everlasting Moulin Rouge tradition of feathers, rhinestones, sequins and beautiful girls.
"Ever since 1889, when Moulin Rouge first opened as a show of young female dancers who performed a very different dance from others - known as the Quadrille - amid frivolous screaming, rowdy and boisterous rhythm, lifting their flowing, flouncy skirts to expose their panties and legs, it continues to amuse audience world over."
The Qadrille dance was later called French Cancan - a funny dance that made a lot of noise and came from France.
The first dance and the last dance with silver white peacock feathers performed by professional dancers and acrobats here mesmerised the audience.
The show, brought to India for the first time by Allliance Francaise, also featured a performance in Mumbai.

New Delhi, Dec 3 (IANS) Immortalised by French artist Henri Toulouse Lautrec and made famous by a candid French cancan - "Moulin Rouge", the musical that has taken innumerable bows worldwide, will perform in Delhi Sunday.
After a show at Mumbai's Taj Mahal hotel at Nariman Point, it is now the capital's turn to be mesmerised by the magical maidens of this touring musical on Dec 4.
"It is a delightful mix of young dancers who scintillate with their synchronised steps," Neha Jha, who saw the performance in Mumbai, told IANS.
"In the dancers resplendent in red flounces and flared feathers embellished with rhinestones and sequins, Delhi will see some of the most beautiful girls in the world come together for a breathtaking evening," she promised.
The show will also combine supper and the launch of Laurent Perrier champagnes and wines in India.
"This is a superb platform to launch Laurent Perrier in India," said Mukul Mehra, president of Global Tax Free Traders.
"The show is famous for its artistic and physical energy illustrated through the dances. The girls belong to so many nations," said a spokesperson of the Alliance Francaise, the organiser of the upcoming gala event.
