Anu Malik upset with T-Series, cancels contract
By Subhash K. Jha, Indo-Asian News Service

Mumbai, April 9 (IANS) Music director Anu Malik is upset with T-Series for having added a song in the film "Humko Deewana Kar Gaye" by Himesh Reshammiya and has cancelled his contract with the music company.

With T-Series getting together with Reshammiya and Bhooshan Kumar's sister Tulsi Kumar for an additional song in the latest Akshay Kumar-Katrina Kaif starrer, Malik is in no mood to remain silent.

"I have had issues earlier with people like David Dhawan and Mukesh Bhatt for bringing other composers into the picture. I was given to understand that the whole score in 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye' is mine. In fact, I never do soundtracks where I have to share sound-space with others. How was I to know that a song will be added after the release of the album?"

Malik admits that Reshammiya's number came as a shock to him.

"I had no idea this was coming. I have now decided to get a written contract with every producer than no other composer would be brought in at the last minute. I have spoken to Harry Baweja about it. I told him I will do his son's 'Love Story 2050' only if I have it in writing that I will be the only music composer. He understood what I have gone through."

Malik is clearly smarting under the blow. "It is very clear that T-Series is promoting one music director. I wish them all the best. I am happy with my daal-chawal. I do not want biryani. I am not looking for a career as a singer."

He was referring to Reshammiya, who is currently riding the charts with his nasal crooning.

"In fact, after this incident, I went to Bhooshan Kumar (of T-Series) who is like a kid to me, and politely told him to cancel my contract with the company."
The music director had recently signed a three-year contract with T-Series as a composer and singer for non-film albums.

"As I said I'd rather focus on my composing career right now. So this incident (with T-Series) has been a blessing in disguise. It helped me to get my priorities right. I do not want to do private albums. Not when J.P. Dutta's 'Umrao Jaan' is around the corner. At this juncture I am looking to compose for the likes of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra. I would not have been able to do that if I was focusing on my private albums."

Meanwhile, Reshammiya, who has walked away with many awards this year, said he had no intention of interfering in anyone's work.

"I have the highest regard for Anu-ji. He is my senior and I have been deeply impressed by his track record. I have no interest in muscling my way into anybody else's domain, least of all his.

"I agreed to do the song for the promotional video of 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye' only after T-Series showed me the NOC (no objection certificate) from Anu-ji. If he had any objection to my promotional song, then why did he give them an NOC?"

Bhooshan Kumar too was of the same view. "We see absolutely no reason for Anu-ji to be upset with Himesh doing the promotional song in 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye'. Does he say he had no choice but to give the NOC? I do not know what he means by that. There was no pressure on him to give the NOC," he said.
