Orissa actor arrested for 'torturing' wife

Bhubaneswar, April 28 (IANS) Orissa police Friday arrested film actor Mihir Swain here for allegedly torturing his actress wife for dowry.

Mihir, a popular TV and film artiste, was arrested for torturing his actress wife Madhumita Mohanty following a complaint by her, a district police official said.
Mihir, who played the lead in Doordarshan serial "Sara Akash", had married Madhumita on Dec 13, 2002.
However, differences cropped up between them, forcing them to live separately for the last two years.
In a complaint lodged at the local women's police station Thursday, Madhumita, a TV actress herself, alleged that Mihir and his parents often tortured her and were also demanding a sum of Rs.200,000 from her parents, the official said.
Acting on her complaint, police arrested Mihir.
Madhumita has acted in many popular serials such as "Sanskara", "Sara Akash" and "Katha Kahuthile Saribani".
Dismissing the allegation as baseless, Mihir said: "I did not harass her. It was Madhumita who used to harass me and my parents."
"I have already filed for a divorce," he added.
