'Taj Mahal' ready for Pakistan release
Indo-Asian News Service

Mumbai, March 26 (IANS) Akbar Khan's colossal historical, "Taj Mahal - An Eternal Love Story", will be the first Indian film in 41 years to be released in Pakistan. The film's clearance for a Pakistan release is expected to pave way for new ties between the film industries of the two countries.

The decision has come as a pleasant surprise, considering Pakistan's previous decision to hold back the release of the classic "Mughal-e-Azam", reported Bollywood Trade.

The release of "Mughal-e-Azam" could not go ahead due to bureaucratic problems despite President Pervez Musharraf extending his support to the screening of the 1960 classic, after receiving a request from the family of director K. Asif.

It is known that Indian films have a tremendous following in Pakistan, which is one of the reasons why there is a flourishing parallel DVD industry with rampant piracy across the border. The clearance of "Taj Mahal - " will encourage other producers to look at the huge market prospects across the border.

Saawan Kumar to clash with Subhash Ghai

Not many filmmakers would prefer scheduling their films' release against one by Subhash Ghai. But producer-director Saawan Kumar Tak has no such apprehensions.

Saawan Kumar's "Saawan - the Love Season" has been scheduled for release April 6, the same day as the release of Mukta Arts' "Shaadi se Pehle", reported Bollywood Trade.

"I was aware from the beginning that Mukta Arts' "Shaadi se Pehle" was scheduled for release on the same day, but my film has a niche audience of its own. I have no cause for worry. I wish good luck to my colleague, Subhash Ghai," Saawan Kumar said.

Incidentally, this is the second time Saawan Kumar has scheduled his release against a Mukta Arts Film. Way back in 1993, his thriller "Khalnaika" coincided with the release of Subhash Ghai's "Khalnayak".

Ghai subsequently accused him of cashing in on the popularity of his film, which generated a huge controversy.

Nandita Singha's artistes had grilling session

Even as debutante producer-director Nandita Singha readies for the release of her ambitious project "Main Rony aur Jony", her cast had a unique story to tell about how they bagged their roles in true corporate style.

According to Aditya Bal, who plays one of the two main protagonists in the comedy, he landed in Nandita's office for a meeting and learnt that she was in Bangalore.

Aditya was in for a big surprise when Nandita's engineer connected him to the producer through video conferencing, reported Bollywood Trade.

"It was definitely not the kind of interview that we see in most production offices. There she was on camera shooting questions at me much to my confusion even as I heard myself answering all of them," Aditya said.

The questions asked were also truly befitting for a corporate interview.

One of them was how he saw himself as an actor five years down the line while another was about the efforts he will make to have a differential edge among the lot of newcomers in the industry, besides how he planned to prepare for the role.

"I got the feeling of writing an MBA entrance exam. On the other hand I wondered about this novel corporate approach that went into the planning of a film," Aditya said.
