Tibetan singer wins US music award
Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh), Nov 21 A Tibetan singer living in the US has won the best Asian album award for his compilation of freedom songs at the 2006 Just Plain Folks (JPF) Music Awards in Los Angeles.

"A Compilation of Tibetan Folk and Freedom Songs" is a solo album by Techung that deals with traditional Tibetan music and opera. JPF is one of America's largest grassroots music communities.

The San Francisco-based Techung performs in both traditional and contemporary styles with an aim to revive Tibetan music.

Techung grew up in Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh where his family still lives. After immigrating to the US, he co-founded the San Francisco-based Chaksampa Tibetan Dance and Opera Company in 1989.

His voice and music have been featured as soundtracks in numerous film and documentaries.
