Priyanshu dons role of comical don
By Manissha Despaande, Indo-Asian News Service

Mumbai, April 2 (IANS) Nandita Singha's "Main Rony Aur Jony" will see actor Priyanshu Chatterjee in a new role - that of a don who breaks into comic capers, reports Bollywood Trade

The low-profile Priyanshu, who has had a few inconsequential releases after the moderately successful "Tum Bin", is said to have worked hard on his role in the film.

According to Nandita, he even got his hair coloured at her insistence to get the stylised Mumbai don look in the film. What excited her though was the way he got into the skin of the character by enacting the mannerisms in his day-to-day life.

"Some of his friends did not even recognise him when he landed up at their common meeting place in the don's get-up. It was incredible," Nandita said.

This is also Priyanshu's first attempt at comedy. Sandali Sinha, who was also his co-star in "Tum Bin", plays his love interest in the film.

Film industry bigwigs support Akbar Khan

With "Taj Mahal - An Eternal Love Story" being cleared as the first Indian film in 41 years to be released in Pakistan, film-maker Akbar Khan sees a new beginning for India-Pakistan ties.

An industry meet called by Akbar to hail the occasion saw industry bigwigs pledging their full support for him. The participants included Mahesh Bhatt, Shyam Shroff, Pahlaj Nihalani, Ratan Jain, Vikas Mohan, Sanjay Khan, Shashi Ranjan and Aditya Bhattacharya.

Akbar said: "We need to look at the bigger picture of friendship between the two countries, rather than whether 'Veer Zaara' or 'Taj Mahal' would be the first to be released in Pakistan.

"This is not about who is a bigger name, it is about spreading love. It would be a tragedy if I have a divided home and seek our industry to promote friendship with the industry of Pakistan."

Islamabad seems to have unofficially chosen him as an ambassador of the film industry to boost India-Pakistan ties. Last week a 20-member delegation from Pakistan visited Akbar's residence in Mumbai to discuss various aspects of the film market in their country.

Akbar, along with his Pakistan-based distributor Satish Anand of Eveready Pictures, is now drawing up an elaborate strategy for the film's distribution in Pakistan.

He said the film was being released with 25 prints to start with, considering the acute shortage of Dolby theatres in Pakistan.

The theatrical promos of the film have already started playing in Pakistan and, according to Akbar, have generated considerable pre-release curiosity for the April 28 release.

Sawan gets censor board nod

Sawan Kumar's "Saaawan - The Love Season", which has Salman Khan in the lead, has been awarded a 'U' certificate without any cuts.

According to Sawan, the examining committee members that viewed the film March 30, liked the film immensely and immediately gave it a go-ahead.

"They commented that they had not seen such a cleanly made film with similar intensity - minus any show of vulgarity - for a long time. They also liked Salman's performance in it," he said.

Apart from a few films, all his films have been awarded 'U' certificates, Sawan added.

The film is being released April 6 with 400 prints globally, with over 100 prints in Mumbai alone.

He said exhibitors were eagerly looking forward to the film's release as all Salman-starrers get a great opening.
