Floral business booms in Jaipur
By Anil Sharma, Indo-Asian News Service
Jaipur, Sep 25 (IANS) More and more people are saying it with flowers, creating a virtual boom in the floral business. Flower sales have gone up by over 60 percent in the last five years in Jaipur alone.
The main reason behind this phenomenal growth is the soaring tendency among the people, mainly the young, to gift flowers on occasions such as Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Friendship Day.
Many feel that a floral gift goes with every occasion.
"Flowers can be given to say 'thank you', 'sorry' or just to cheer up somebody," says Rohit Bhandari, a college student.
But floral greetings are a recent development, at least in Rajasthan. Flower sellers believe this is mainly due to the increased awareness among the people about the value and appeal of flowers.
"Gifting flowers was not considered an option earlier. Now it has become a standard gift for birthdays, anniversaries and other occasions," says Bineet Chauhan, managing director of Flora International.
"Also, occasions like Mother's Day and Father's Day are events people didn't know about earlier."
In the past five years, the sale of flowers has increased by about 60 percent. Today the monthly turnover of the flower market here is estimated to Rs.5-6 million.
Still the maximum demand for flowers is because of weddings and parties.
Says Murli, a flower shop owner: "It is not just the upper class but everyone and all age groups have a taste for flowers."
Today even a 10-year-old kid wants a flower for his favourite teacher on Teachers' Day.
Shilpa, a student of Class 12, feels: "It is a simple gift, not too expensive and comes with a 100 percent guarantee of bringing a smile on the receiver's face! I generally prefer roses, whether in a bouquet form or a single flower."
Fortunately, its prices have fallen in recent years.
Many flowers like Carnations, Orchids and Dutch Roses have become cheaper than they used to be five years ago. "Their costs have gone down by 15 to 20 percent," says Bineet Chauhan.
But is it just a passing phase or a trend that is here to stay?
Replies Ram Prasad, a florist on Tonk Road: "Nobody gets bored of flowers. It gives you the same nice feeling every time you receive it. This trend of gifting flowers will continue."
Most customers too think the same.
"Love for flowers cannot come and go. If someone has a liking for flowers, it will always remain their first choice of gift," says Sangeeta Aggarwal, a housewife.
