Indo-Asian News Service

New York, Jan 3 (IANS) Steven Spielberg's new movie "Munich" has been endorsed by the widows of two participants at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, who were among those killed by Palestinian terrorists.

But Ilana Romano, widow of weightlifter Yosef Romano, and Ankie Spitzer, who was married to fencing coach Andre Spitzer, say the film doesn't dishonour their husbands' memories or tarnish their country's image, reports hollywood.com.

Spitzer says: "We didn't feel it was an affront or a negative thing, or an equation between the terrorists and the people who were trying to eliminate them - not innocent people, but people who would try to make another Munich."

Kate Moss seeing Oxford student?
DPA

London, Jan 3 (DPA) Kate Moss, the British supermodel whose reputation has been tainted by drug abuse, has been spotted in the company of a 20-year-old Oxford University student who also works as a model, the Sun newspaper reported Tuesday.

It said Moss, 31, and James Burke, a former pupil at Charterhouse, one of Britain's leading private schools, had been seen together in the US ski resort of Aspen, Colorado.

They had met two weeks ago at the holiday home of Richard Branson, the British multi-millionaire and owner of Virgin Atlantic airline, in the Caribbean.

Moss is reported to have dropped her former boyfriend, rocker Pete Doherty, after a stormy and drug-fuelled relationship.

The top model was caught on camera snorting cocaine during one of Doherty's studio sessions in London last autumn. Publication of the damaging video footage by a British tabloid prompted Moss to apologize for her "mistake."

Several fashion houses, including Chanel and H&M, cancelled their contracts with Moss who has since undergone drug rehabilitation treatment at a major US clinic.

Indian American pop singer to perform at Grammy's
By Ashok Easwaran, Indo-Asian News Service

Chicago, Jan 4 (IANS) Pop singer Reggie Benjamin, the first Indian American to win a Hollywood deal, is all set to perform at the Grammy awards next month.

Benjamin, who has also filmed a music video in Hugh Heffner's fabulous Playboy Mansion, said his success was a lucky coincidence, coming as it did with an increasing American interest in Bollywood.

"Suddenly, it is cool to be Indian," Benjamin, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, told IANS.

To become a Hollywood pop singer was an unusual career choice for Benjamin who was studying to be a chemical engineer. His persistence paid off when he was signed on by music industry mogul Kerry Gordy.

But the path to success has been long and arduous. In the initial years, no one wanted to even listen to him, said Benjamin.

"After Sep 11, Hollywood stereotyped Indian Americans in the category 'Middle Eastern'. It was very hard," said the singer who has knocked on Hollywood doors since 1998.

"Earlier they did not even give a chance. Finally, I tried to trick them - I stopped sending my pictures along with my portfolios. It worked because my name does not give a clue to my Indian ancestry," he said.

Benjamin, the son of immigrants from Andhra Pradesh, studied music, business and chemical engineering. But his talent for show business set him on a trajectory to become a pop star.

Benjamin's choice of vocation could not have been more unconventional. His father was a Christian pastor who was especially fond of Elvis Presley's gospel songs, to which Benjamin attributes his interest in music.

"My parents always listened to Elvis' gospel music and watched his movies," recalled Benjamin. He began doing Elvis impersonations when he was eight. "I was performing live for relatives and friends for money."

On a visit to Washington, he got all his cousins together and charged them a dollar admission fee. It was his first paid performance.

Benjamin quickly graduated to performing at music concerts and at major Hollywood events. Now, he is all set to perform at the Grammy awards red carpet event Feb 8.

Over the years, Benjamin has won several distinctions in pop music. He was the first Indian to make it to the Billboard charts and has had 10 hits in a row in more than 25 countries.

But perhaps Benjamin's most spectacular coup was the shooting of his video "Hurry Up" at Hugh Heffner's Playboy Mansion. Benjamin was looking for something controversial for his new video and thought shooting at the Mansion would be sensational enough.

"I rang up Heffner's office every day for four months to seek permission to shoot. When they denied me permission to shoot inside the Mansion, I asked if I could shoot outside the gates or on the driveway. The answer was a firm no.

"Finally, one day when I called, I heard Heffner's assistant telling him, 'It is that kid again' and Heffner's reply in the background, 'Let the kid shoot his video inside the mansion.' Unexpectedly, he also allowed me to use five Playmates in the video."

On the shoot, Benjamin said: "It was quite an experience. Playboy Mansion is beautiful. One has this preconception of a house filled with girls. But when I went there for the first time there were no girls but monkeys, flamingos and parrots in the backyard, and a huge swimming pool."

Benjamin subsequently took his parents to meet Heffner.

"He was very nice," said Benjamin. "Although on the trip home, my mother kept asking me 'What exactly is Playboy'?"

The success of "Hurry up" paved the way for his second single, "Ride", which was quickly ranked number four in the Billboard Breakout Dance Charts.

Another of his albums, "Chandamama", turned out to be hugely popular with the younger generation. "It is an album anyone from eight to eighty can relate to," he said.

In Bollywood, Benjamin likes the late playback singer Kishore Kumar.

"But Hariharan is my favorite," he said.

He said he was negotiating with Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan to feature the actor in one of his music videos.

How did his parents react to his choice of career?

"Initially, they were sceptical and very worried. Like all Indian American parents, they wanted me to become a doctor, engineer or a lawyer. But they saw me on television with the likes of Steve Wonder - that is a sure sign that you have made it. And then money started coming in. That makes all the difference."

Jennifer Lopez's 'Carmen' to be dumped
Indo-Asian News Service

New York, Jan 5 (IANS) A planned Jennifer Lopez version of the classic tale "Carmen" is reportedly being canned because Hollywood investors didn't want to see her die at the end of the film.

According to Internet Movie Database, director Taylor Hackford is certain that the industry is refusing to risk $50 million because it wants to see Lopez in her usual light-hearted 'girl-next-door' roles.

The movie inspired by Georges Bizet's opera instead turns Lopez into a sultry Spanish temptress who ends up being killed by her jealous lover.

Hackford says: "Studios are so frightened at the moment that they are looking for outside money. There is a great deal of fear in Hollywood. Many of the films are not working (at box office).

"Carmen is not a sweet, nice girl. This is a piece about a criminal. We want to do a tough, hard version, but Hollywood thinks the audience (for Jennifer Lopez) is 13-year-old girls. It has an ending that Hollywood does not like to make."

Americans don't understand 'Jarhead', says Mendes
Indo-Asian News Service

London, Jan 5 (IANS) Director Sam Mendes says US viewers don't understand his new movie "Jarhead" as well as Europeans because they always expect war to be one-sided.

According to Internet Movie Database, the movie is based on Anthony Swofford's novel "Jarhead: A Marine's Chronicle Of The Gulf War And Other Battles". Mendes thinks viewers didn't grasp the movie because it focuses on the frivolousness of war and not the glory.

He says: "I feel they've understood in Europe. In America, it's like talking about a different movie. Fundamentally, 'Jarhead' disobeys all the laws of American movies, and not just the political laws of American movies right now which demand on some level to tell us which side they're on.

"In Europe, there's a sense this film comes from the tradition of absurdist war movies about the futility of conflict. It has more in common with (Samuel) Beckett, (Jean-Paul) Sartre and (Luis) Bunuel than it does with Oliver Stone. In America, they assumed I was trying to make an Oliver Stone movie and that I'd failed."

Hatcher denies comments on pay packets?
Indo-Asian News Service

London, Jan 5 (IANS) Star of the hit TV show "Desperate Housewives" Teri Hatcher has slammed claims that she was the highest earning cast member of the show.

According to ananova.com, she set the record straight. Hatcher was angry that a psychologist told tabloids she was losing weight to be the thinnest cast member in order to justify her higher salary.

She says: "They should have their licence taken away for commenting on someone's health without them being a patient. I don't even know if I earn the most. I make exactly what I made when I signed my initial contract, and I don't know what the other girls get."

She adds: "I wasn't anywhere near the top of the list to get this show. Either I deserved it or somebody thought I was the weakest person on the planet and if they didn't do something spectacular for me, I'd off myself out of depression.

"I know I will not be hot again soon... I don't know if that means two years or five years, but it lets me enjoy what is happening now to the fullest. It also makes me smart about securing a future for me and for my family."

He says: "I am surprised about what the public thinks of me. They say again and again that I am a highly depressive guy who can hardly get out of bed for the next day. Bulls**t.

"But that seems to fit them well. Like, he may be the famous entertainer Robbie Williams, but he can't enjoy his life. He can't be happy. He is depressive, a terrible person; he can't sing and is certainly gay."
