Lee gives hope to Taiwanese film industry
Indo-Asian News Service
London, Feb 15 (IANS) The numerous Oscar nominations and the box office success of "Brokeback Mountain" is raising hopes in director Ang Lee's native country Taiwan that its ailing movie industry can be saved.
Contactmusic.com reports that Taiwanese films accounted for only 10 percent of the 400 plus movies shown in the country and only 1.59 percent of ticket sales last year. "Brokeback Mountain" has been nominated for Best Picture and seven other awards and has grossed over $1 million in ticket sales in Taiwan.
The film has been instrumental in inspiring young filmmakers to revive the country's film industry. A young Taiwanese director Lin Chien-Pin says: "Ang Lee's success shows it is not impossible to strike a balance between art and box office."
