German movie emerges winner at
European Film Awards
DPA
Warsaw, Dec 3 German director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's
"The Lives of Others", set in communist-era East Germany,
triumphed over Pedro Almodovar's "Volver" to win the European
Film 2006 at the 19th European Film Awards here.
Donnersmarck also scored the European Screenwriter 2006 award
Saturday night, while Ulrich Muhe won European Actor 2006 for
his role in the critically acclaimed film "Das Leben Der Anderen"
in the original German-language version.
Spanish director Almodovar's life-after-death comic drama "Volver"
(Coming Back) won in the categories of best European director,
actress, composer and cinematographer.
Dressed in a glittering, golden evening gown, Hollywood star
Penelope Cruz walked away with the European Actress 2006 for her
role in "Volver".
Almodovar himself scored the European Director 2006 prize and
composer Alberto Iglesias was named European Composer 2006 for
the film's soundtrack, while Jose Luis Alcaine took the prize
for cinematography.
The European Cinematographer 2006 award was handed to Barry
Ackroyd for his camera-work on Ken Loach's "The Wind That Shakes
the Barley".
Polish-born director Roman Polanski, who has won an Oscar for
his Holocaust drama "The Pianist", received a lifetime
achievement award.
Prizes were awarded in 14 categories. The French-Georgian

recognised as European Discovery 2006, while Germany's "Die
Grosse Stille" (Into Great Silence) by director Philip Groning
was named European Film Academy Documentary 2006.
French actress Sophie Marceau and Polish screen heartthrob
Maciej Stuhr hosted the gala, considered the European Oscars.
NYT dubs Indian American actor's movie as 'Gross'
New York, Dec 3 Indian American actor Kal Penn's new
comedy "National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj"
has been panned by the New York Times as a "Graduate
Degree in Grossness".
The film by MGM Studios, which opened across the US
Friday, is described by reviewer Jeannette Catsoulis as a
"Britain and India face off" and "a strained attempt to
transplant the American campus comedy to more uptight
shores".
Taj "harnesses smut and silliness to an oddly innocent
tale of true love", she says, "while the screenplay dives
into British history, and the camera dives into every
cleavage in sight, some of the cast members transcend the
banality".
"Now graduated from college - and sidekick status - Taj
Badalandabad (Kal Penn) heads to Camford University in
England to pursue a Ph.D. and a bad reputation... And no,
the predominance of British accents does not make this any
classier," Catsoulis adds.
The new Penn film follows up his recent roles in "Superman
Returns" and a "A Lot Like Love" by taking the lead role
in this new Van Wilder comedy.
Next year, he will be seen in Fox Searchlight's Mira
Nair-directed film "The Namesake" and on Fox Television's
Emmy Award-winning action series "24".
Born Kalpen Modi in Montclair, New Jersey, of Gujarati
Indian ancestry on April 23, 1977, Kal Penn may be best
known for his role in "Harold and Kumar Go to White
Castle" and "Where's the Party, Yaar?" |

Kidman with the offer to help Urban when he gets out.

Crow turning to country music
London, Dec 3 Grammy winning singer Sheryl Crow is turning
to country music and says she will record an album
describing the personal problems she fought over the past
few years.
Crow has just overcome breast cancer and now lives close
to the country music capital Nashville. Apart from her
illness, she will also mention her broken relationship
with cyclist champion Lance Armstrong in the album,
reported contactmusic.com.
She explains: "I'm going to produce myself again and I'm
working on an old-school country record. A lot of the
stuff I've written like 'If it makes you happy', are just
country songs, so I'm in that world of trying to strip it
down and make something that feels honest and steeped in
American influence. I had a lot of things happen to me in
the last five years that I feel compelled to write about." |

Federline making plans for future
New York, Dec 3 Kevin Federline, the former husband of
Britney Spears, is desperately trying to hold on to his
fame after separating from his wife and is planning a
reality show.
He is likely to star in the show with Kenneth Carr, the
producer of MTV's "House of Carters", said pagesix.com.
Carr was quoted as saying by pagesix.com: "We are in
talks. Kevin doesn't dislike or hate Britney. The show
will present him for who he is, but will not smear her. It
was just a marriage that didn't work out."
Carr said he got support for the project after "I gave
people a different perspective of him (Federline) and made
people really respect him". |
