New York, Dec 10 (IANS) Oscar wining actor and director Mel Gibson is being looked at by some California Republicans as their next governor to replace the increasingly unpopular Arnold Schwarzenegger from office.

Websites are pleading with Gibson to stand for elections even though he had said he never wanted to enter politics. Schwarzenegger's poll ratings have dipped in recent weeks.

A source says: "We have to look for alternatives to the governor because he's been behaving like someone who wants to go back to Hollywood.

He adds: "Gibson's shown himself to be both fiscally and socially conservative, and the success of 'The Passion of the Christ' shows that he has the ability to reach out to people. We hope to meet with him and encourage him."

Lennon's murder still haunts McCartney
Indo-Asian News Service

New York, Dec 10 (IANS) Sir Paul McCartney has admitted that the murder of John Lennon still haunts him.

According to ananova.com, McCartney confessed he tried to not dwell on the "nature" of the death of his friend. He says: "The first thing that goes through your mind is the horrific conditions of his death. That's what always hits me.

"And you think: Gosh, my mate, that's what happened to him. But, then, rather than dwell on that I immediately go to the fantastic times we had and how lucky and privileged I feel to be one of the people who spent the most time with him during his life having met him as a teenager.

"People start these rumours: 'He was this, he was that.' I say: Look, I've slept with him. We've done hitch-hiking holidays and we've had to top and tail it because there was only one bed. I say: 'I knew him.'"

He added: "I think what everybody already knows, he was a fantastic man, really fantastic guy. Just as a man, as an activist, he is one of the great men of the 20th century."

'Geisha' director defends casting
Indo-Asian News Service

New York, Dec 10 (IANS) Rob Marshall, director of "Memoirs Of A Geisha" has defended his decision to cast Chinese actors in place of Japanese ones, saying that they were chosen for their talent and not where they came from.

According to Internet Movie Database, Marshall spoke out after being criticised by Chinese critics for choosing Chinese actresses Ziyi Zhang and Gong Li to play the lead roles.

The critics insist Marshall is insensitive because of the atrocities committed by the Japanese during the 1930s Chinese occupation.

Marshall says: "When you saw 'Zorba The Greek' and you saw Anthony Quinn play Zorba, was that odd to you because he was Irish and Mexican?"

Actress Gong Li defended her position, insisting her decision to star in the film was based purely on character and not race. She said: "As actors, we seek roles that challenge and inspire us."

Watts reveals decision to star in 'King Kong'
Indo-Asian News Service

London, Dec 10 (IANS) Actress Naomi Watts has revealed that she had agreed to star in "King Kong" without reading the script.

According to ananova.com, Watts said she agreed to star in the film because she had faith in director Peter Jackson. Watts plays Ann Darrow originally played by Fay Wray in the 1933 movie.

She says: "I was hugely excited when I got the call to come and meet Peter Jackson. When we met there was no script - but I think his work is great and agreed to do the movie before having read it! When I finally got the script, I just thought: Wow! It's different to anything I've ever done before.

"Although it's an event spectacle film, the characters have a huge amount of depth. Another one of the key things with me signing on for the movie was that Peter had lived with this film in his head since he was nine years old. Peter had spoken with Fay Wray and he was so touched by her."

Pot helped me deal with chemotherapy: Etheridge
Indo-Asian News Service

London, Dec 10 (IANS) Rocker Melissa Etheridge said she snorted marijuana as she coped with the side effects of chemotherapy because it was the only thing that comforted her.

According to contactmusic.com, Etheridge is now free from cancer and has said marijuana helped her cope with the worst of radiation therapy on the advice of doctors.

She says: "I bought a vaporiser to heat up the herb, which I'd inhale four or five times a day. Using the pot was the best advice anybody gave me. It relieved most of my symptoms and I got a great deal of comfort from it."

She is urging US politicians to reverse the strict laws that forbid people from using medical marijuana.

She added: "I'm furious that our country is denying the use of pot as pain relief. It should be legalised for medicinal purposes. I wonder if I'd have got through chemotherapy without it."

Indo-Asian News Service

London, Dec 10 (IANS) Lead singer Bono of U2 has become so politically involved that his band once thought that he would ruin them.

According to contactmusic.com, Bono claims that his band members worried that his antics would bore their audiences. But in reality his being away for political causes proved to be a blessing in disguise.

He says: "I think they like it when I'm not in the studio annoying them. I think I try to make the molecules in the room vibrate too fast for them. They're craftsmen.

"I'm not about craft - I'm crafty. I pull rabbits out of hats. But, yeah, they were concerned I would destroy the band. Not the band relationships, more that our audience would tire of me. It was a concern. But our audience feels they have a voice themselves through my big mouth. The tension isn't what it was."
