Michael Jackson's hurricane relief song getting ready
DPA

Manama (Bahrain), Jan 10 (DPA) US pop star Michael Jackson is putting the finishing touches to a song to raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Keisha Cole, Ciara, Snoop Dogg, Babyface and R Kelly are among the singers lending their voices to the song, which will be released by the Bahraini label 2 Seas Records.

More than 10 other artists are involved, with most recording their parts in Los Angeles. Jackson recorded his in London.

The music company, 2 Seas Records, belongs to Jackson's close friend Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the governor of the southern governorate and the son of Bahrain's king.

Jackson wrote the song himself in response to Hurricane Katrina that hit several states along the US Gulf Coast last August, causing widespread death and devastation.

"This project is in response to the widespread devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina," Sheikh Abdullah was quoted as telling Bahrain's English daily Gulf Daily News.

"It is my hope that the proceeds from this recording will make a tremendous difference to all individuals affected by this tragedy in the US"

No release date has been announced, but the newspaper said the song was due out "very soon".

News reports have revealed Jackson was in talks with a local company over a string of possible entertainment projects in the Gulf, including theme parks and musical academies.

The 47-year-old star has been living in Bahrain since late June, after he was cleared of 13 sex abuse charges on June 13 by a California court.

Arnold vows to ride on after motorbike crash
DPA

Los Angeles, Jan 10 (DPA) California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has returned to work, disobeying instructions from doctors after he sustained minor injuries in a motorbike crash.

He vowed that the tumble would not stop him riding his beloved Harley Davidson.

Schwarzenegger needed 15 stitches in his upper lip following the Sunday afternoon incident in which a car backed out of a driveway in front of him. Schwarzenegger's son, Patrick, who was riding in the bike's sidecar, was unharmed. Both were wearing helmets.

"I was very lucky," Schwarzenegger said during an appearance Monday at a health centre for women and children in north Hollywood. "It could have been very different."

The former world-champion bodybuilder and action movie star kept to his regular work schedule even though he revealed that doctors had advised him to rest and avoid speaking for three days.

"My wife said, 'Make it seven'," Schwarzenegger joked.

He also said that the accident would not stop him from riding motorcycles, just as he had kept on riding during his acting career despite signing contracts forbidding him to do so.

"I did all those things anyway," Schwarzenegger said. "I never played by the rules."

Four years ago, Schwarzenegger broke several ribs and was hospitalised for four days after a serious motorcycle accident.

Alley questions Scientology
Indo-Asian News Service

New York, Jan 10 (IANS) Former "Cheers" star and Scientology devotee Kirstie Alley has questioned the religion saying that it may not be as inspirational as is claimed because it did not help her to diet.

According to hollywood.com, Alley once weighed 220 pounds and was forced to seek advice from weight loss expert Jenny Craig to help her shed weight, despite Scientology's claim to hold the answer to dieting.

She had used the religion's teachings to kick a cocaine habit but she couldn't use the same techniques to help her food addiction.

According to Alley: "It was different in that I developed a nutty attitude where I'd think, 'If some guy really loves me, he does not care if I am fat.' Or, 'To be a good mother, you have got to cook and eat the food you give your kids.' I'd come up with all these stupid justifications and reasons why it would be okay to be fat."

She says: "Well, I think Catherine and Michael are very good together, but as for doing a remake... I think that would be silly. It wouldn't be as good as the one with me in it."

Craig as peacemaker on 'Munich' sets
Indo-Asian News Service

London, Jan 10 (IANS) Actor Daniel Craig prepared for his role as James Bond by playing peacemaker on the sets of "Munich".

According to contactmusic.com, Craig achieved what world leaders have been attempting for years but failed - bringing together Palestinians and Israelis.

Craig plays a member of a gang of terrorists hired to track and kill the Palestinians responsible for the deaths of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics. He says actors who would usually be on opposite sides came together for the movie.

He says: "It was very inspiring. We did one scene in Beirut and we had young Palestinian actors and young Israeli actors and we all had a drink together that night. It was cause for celebration in some strange way because both Israeli and Palestinian actors said they would never have had this chance to meet each other, even though they lived very close to each other."

Theron accused of angling for Oscar
Indo-Asian News Service

London, Jan 10 (IANS) Charlize Theron has slammed claims that she has chosen an unattractive role in her new movie "North County" in an effort to boost her chance of winning another Academy Award after "Monster" in 2004.

According to contactmusic.com, Theron had gained considerable weight to play the serial killer Aileen Wuornos in "Monster". She went the unglamorous way again in "North County" to play a female miner.

Theron is angry she has been accused to angling for an Oscar. She says: "That's nonsense. It was necessary to change my looks for 'North Country', because mine workers really don't look chic.

"When beautiful women change her looks for a movie - like Nicole Kidman in 'The Hours' or Halle Berry in 'Monster's Ball' - that has nothing to do with calculation. It is the job of an actress to play other people."
