Maines retracts apology to Bush
Indo-Asian News Service
New York, May 22 (IANS) Natalie Maines, lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, has taken back the apology she issued to US President George W. Bush in 2003 saying he doesn't deserve any respect for his actions in Iraq.
According to contactmusic.com, in 2003 Maines told a London audience: "Just so you know, we are ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas."
Later Maines got death threats and a backlash from other country stars. She was forced to apologise, but now says: "I don't feel that way anymore. I don't feel he is owed any respect whatsoever."
Band mate Emily Robinson says she knew when the comment was made that it would brew trouble. She says: "It wasn't that I didn't agree with her 100 percent, it was just, 'Oh, this is going to stir something up."
