Rolling Stones to play in China - but five songs banned
DPA
Shanghai, April 7 (DPA) The Rolling Stones are to perform in China for the first time, but five of their songs have been banned by the country's culture ministry, lead singer Mick Jagger said Friday.
The ministry requested the band not to perform the songs at their concert in Shanghai Saturday because of their sexually suggestive lyrics.
"Luckily we have 400 songs we can play," Jagger told reporters.
Two planned concerts in China by the Stones had to be cancelled three years ago because of the outbreak of
SARS. At that time the band agreed not to play "Honky Tonk Women", "Brown Sugar", "Beast Of Burden" and "Let's Spend the Night Together".
Jagger did not reveal what the fifth song banned this time was, adding that the culture ministry's request was "friendly".
Guitarist Keith Richards suggested the band might play the banned songs as instrumentals.
The Stones are to play to 8,000 fans in China, most of them foreigners. The concert is also to be shown later on state-run television.
