Rolling Stones top music earners in US
DPA
Los Angeles, Feb 15 (DPA) Veteran rock band the Rolling Stones were the top-earning musical act in the US in 2005, bringing in $168 million in sales of concert tickets and CD's, according to figures released by Forbes magazine.
Irish rockers U2 were second with a total of $150 million, followed by country star Kenny Chesney with $110 million.
The magazine reported that the list was dominated by successful touring acts, underlining the high prices that bands with older fans were able to charge for concert tickets, often reaching an average of $100. Total album sales were down some 7 percent in 2005, continuing a downward spiral prompted by Internet file-sharing and increased competition from video games and DVD movies.
Punk band Green Day were fourth with combined sales of $99 million, followed by The Eagles with $84 million and Paul McCartney with $83 million.
Celine Dion was the seventh-best earner, notching up $81 million, followed by rapper 50 Cent at $79 million, Dave Matthews at $74 million and Elton John at $66 million.
