Confucius' 'Analects' to be made into Internet movie
By Bai Ying
Beijing, Oct 2 (Xinhua) "The Analects", the Bible of Confucianism, will be made into a digital movie for show on the Internet and, depending on its success, a regular film version may follow.
Confucianism, enshrined by Chinese feudal rulers as the orthodox school of thought since the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-24 AD), has dominated Chinese society for long, and started to spread to Europe in the late 16th century.
Yu Wenyi, the movie's screenwriter and director, considers his work, a combination of an Internet movie and a regular movie, a "super movie".
The Internet movie is expected to be finished by the end of the year for paid show, Yu said.
"The Analects" is a book on the statements of Confucius (551-479 BC) compiled by his disciples after his death.
"I intend to express the thesis that a person must be righteous and the fact that whoever opposed Confucius didn't have a good end," said Yu, also a researcher with Beijing University.
The producer will consider shooting a theatrical film after measuring the movie's success on the Internet, and place more emphasis on screen effects, according to Yu.
"Producing a 'super movie' by stages can avoid the investment risks of the traditional film industry and help more people realise their dreams of shooting movies, and thus profit the industry's development," he said.
The Internet movie of "The Analects", due to start shooting this month, is estimated to cost 300,000 yuan ($37,000), Yu said.
Confucianism advocates benevolence and courtesy among people. It helped shape the value of sacrificing one's personal interests for the good of others and among Chinese people.
Confucianism was banished from the mainstream culture in China in the early and middle parts of the 20th century, as revolutionaries were eager to break away from the old and the past.
But it has regained popularity and has been given proper attention in the present-day China. Its overseas influence has also been increasing.
