Oliver Stone's joke backfires
London, Dec 19 Acclaimed director Oliver Stone, who won
Oscars for "Platoon" and "Born on the Fourth of July", shocked
an audience when he made a joke about the recent murders of five
sex workers in England at an award ceremony.
The murders remain unsolved and the audience, which comprised
celebrities like comedian Sacha Baron Cohen and singer Charlotte
Church, were mortified by the joke, reports imdb.com.
Stone was presenting the award for best comedy film to director
Nick Park for "Wallace and Gromit" and went on to joke: "It's
great to be back in England. I feel, Jack The Ripper (prolific
19th century serial killer) days are back. Nothing ever changes
here."
When stone caught on that the joke had backfired, he quipped:
"You're a lovely crowd."
Holmes helping Beckham make it big in Hollywood
New York, Dec 19 Katie Holmes, superstar Tom
Cruise's wife, is exerting her influence in Hollywood to
help best friend Victoria Beckham make it big in filmdom.
Homes is trying to set up a meeting between the former
Spice Girl and two time Oscar winning director Steven
Spielberg. The meeting is to take place at Holmes' 28th
birthday party.
Hollywood.com quoted a close friend of Holmes as saying:
"Katie thinks Victoria has a real future as an actress but
she wants her to start at the top. She's anxious to
introduce her to every major power player in town. She and
Tom may not have the power to create a new star by
themselves but they know who does."

Stefani praying for more kids
New York, Dec 19 Gwen Stefani, former No Doubt lead
singer, says she is praying for more babies with her
husband, rocker Gavin Rossdale.
People.com quoted Stefani as saying: "I pray that I can
have another baby - I mean it's such a miracle to have
one. And there's so much I still want to do, because who
knows things could be a lot harder a few years from now.
"I mean I'm not at the beginning of my career. I'm on a
ticking clock. And I don't want to miss anything."

Animation legend Joseph Barbera dead
DPA
Washington, Dec 19 (DPA) Joseph Barbera, an animation
pioneer who with partner Bill Hanna created legendary
cartoons like "Tom and Jerry", "The Flintstones" and
"Scooby Doo", has died in Studio City, California, Warner
Bros said. He was 95.
The business partners founded Hanna-Barbera Studios in
1957, becoming one of the first groups to make cartoons
for television.
Barbera, who died Monday, was born in New York City in
1911 and worked as a banker before studying art and
becoming an animator.
He first collaborated with Hanna, who died in 2001, in
1937 at MGM Studios, where the pair created another famous
duo, the cartoon cat and mouse - Tom and Jerry.
Tom and Jerry earned seven Academy Awards.
Barbera also worked to create "The Flintstones". The
sitcom-style show that tracks the life of "the modern
Stone Age family" has aired in over 80 countries.
His adventures of a group of detective teens and their
scared dog, "Scooby-Doo Where are You?" ran for 17 years
and is the longest-ever running animated television
programme.
Barbera's other works include "The Huckeberry Hound Show",
"The Jetsons" and the "Smurfs". He remained active at his
production company into his 90s.

Lopez and Carrey rebuff Scientology rumours
New York, Dec 19 Hollywood actors Jenifer Lopez and
Jim Carrey have dismissed reports that their newfound
friendship with Tom Cruise is proof of their interest in
Scientology.
Lopez was apparently introduced to the faith by actress
Leah Remini and Carrey is taking basic courses. The media
went into speculation mode when Lopez and Carrey were
invited for Cruise and Holmes wedding along with their
partners because they have never been spotted all
together.
More recently, Lopez and her husband singer Marc Antony
have been spotted with Cruise and Holmes no less than
three times together, reports imdb.com.
Their representatives, however, vehemently deny
Scientology is not their unifying interest.
Lopez's spokesperson says: "I have no knowledge of this,
but I probably wouldn't have a comment on it if I did."
Carrey's publicist adds: "He is not taking classes."

Damon had problems with 'Good Shepherd' script
London, Dec 19 Actor Matt Damon, who won an Oscar
for the script of "Good Will Hunting", had problems with
the story of his latest movie "The Good Shepherd".
The movie is directed by acting legend Robert DeNiro and
features Damon as a workaholic CIA agent having an affair.
He has no time for his wife, played by Angelina Jolie.
Damon thinks the character cheating on his wife is too far
fetched and audiences will find it hard to believe it,
reports contactmusic.com.
He says: "You're married to Angelina Jolie and you've got
no time for her, which is kind of hard to believe."

Fan dumps Christina Ricci for wearing fur
London, Dec 19 Cristina Ricci, who appeared in
"Sleepy Hollow" and "Monster", has angered a fan who has
shut down a site dedicated to the actress.
The fan was offended after she found that Ricci wears fur,
according to ananova.com. The site after being shut down
has a message posted, saying: "Offline due to fur usage."
The fan goes on to give her explanations: "I recently
found out Christina doesn't appear to have a problem
wearing fur. Well, I do. I also have a problem with people
who wear fur. Conclusion: I have a problem with
Christina."

Moore returns to movies for her kids' sake
London, Dec 19 Actress Demi Moore, who took a break
from movies to raise her children, is returning to films
because her kids are supposedly tired of her.
Moore said she appeared in her latest movie "Bobby" only
because her children bugged her to get out of the house
and act again.
Contactmusic.com quoted her as saying: "I knew if I wasn't
with them they could have bigger problems than normal
teens. I wasn't retired from acting; I figured I'd do it
again when I could. Now work has become important again
because my children were starting to ask if I was ever
going to work again."

Carrey's film back on track
New York, Dec 20 Comic actor Jim Carrey's latest
film "Ripley's Believe it or Not" is back on track after
having been postponed because of budget problems.
Plans for the film were stalled in June just before
production was to begin because the budget ballooned to
more than $150 million.
The producers have now roped in Steve Oedekerk to redo the
script for Carrey and director Tim Burton. Carrey has also
contributed ideas to spruce up his character, reports
hollywood.com.
The budget is now under control. Production will begin in
2008 in China and is expected hit the marquee in 2009.

Schwarzenegger film tops worst seasonal film poll
London, Dec 20 Arnold Schwarzenegger's Christmas
film "Jingle All the Way" has been voted the worst
seasonal film ever in a poll conducted by the site PearlandDean.com.
In the film, Schwarzenegger's character tries to get a
Christmas gift for his son, but fans did not warm up to it
too much, reports contactmusic.com.
Other infamous movies on the list include "Santa Conquers
the Martians", "Home Alone", and "Bad Santa".
Kathryn Jacobs of the site says: "Everybody loves a good
family film at Christmas but they can't all be classics
like 'It's A Wonderful Life'. We think Arnie is a very
worthy winner."

Springsteen pleases daughter with Lachey gift
London, Dec 20 Rock star Bruce Springsteen went out
of his way to meet Nick Lachey at a party recently because
his daughter, Jessica Rae, would have been very upset if
he had not made the effort.
Jessica is a huge fan of Lachey. Springsteen knew that he
would have to meet Lachey or else there would be trouble
at home.

"Springsteen ran across the crowd to gush over Nick and
hugged him - so he could go home and tell his daughter,
Jessica Rae, he 'got action from Nick'.

No more fur for Christina Ricci
London, Dec 20 Actress Christina Ricci is begging
forgiveness from her fans after she was photographed
wearing fur.
A fan of Ricci recently shot down a site dedicated to her
because she wears fur. Ricci was photographed on the front
cover of W magazine in reindeer fur.
But now Ricci has come out and apologised to the animal
rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)
after they placed her on their worst dressed list, reports
contactmusic.com.
In an email, Ricci said: "I never meant to hurt or anger
anyone with my insensitivity. For what it is worth, I have
received the message loud and clear and will not be
wearing fur in the future. I apologise for my offensive
actions."

Robbie Williams doesn't want to be a father
London, Dec 20 British singer Robbie Williams has
said he doesn't want children because can't see them go
through pain in their lives.
Williams believes that the pain they will go through will
be more than the joys.

that to be fulfilled you have to have kids. What's the
point of having kids? I can't guarantee that I won't
father a child that won't be in pain because that kid's
going to be in pain at some point in their life. I don't
want to see that. It's too much."

Fallon and Stone to star together
London, Dec 20 "Basic Instinct" actress Sharon
Stone and comic star Jimmy Fallon have agreed to work in a
new drama titled "Eliot Rockett".
Fallon will play a workaholic who does not want to commit
to his girlfriend. He comes back home after his estranged
father suffers a stroke. Stone is set to play his mother,
reports ananova.com.
The film will start shooting in February 2007.

John full of praise for Michael
London, Dec 21 Rock star Elton John is praising
reformed singer George Michael and is happy that he is
performing again.
John had called Michael boring last year but now says that
he said it to encourage him to get back to stage. Michael
is earning good reviews for his current tour and will
perform in the US soon.

that Michael is back out on tour putting on a great show.
When I did that interview saying I thought Michael should
get out more, I just meant he should get back on stage

Michael stages free concert to thank nurses
London, Dec 21 Troubled pop superstar George
Michael performed a special concert to pay tribute to
nurses here who took care of his late mother before her
death.
Michael's mother, Lesley Panos, died of cancer almost 10
years ago and Michael had promised that he would put on a
free show for the nurses, reports contactmusic.com.
He told the audience of almost 2,000 nurses, "Thank you to
every single one of you. I salute you and this evening is
100 percent me saying 'Thank you' to you."

Liv Tyler support sanitation campaign
New York, Dec 21 "Lord Of The Rings" star Liv Tyler
was spotted recently buying a T-shirt in support of a
sanitation campaign.
Tyler, who is the daughter of Aerosmith lead singer Steven
Tyler, bought a New York City Sanitation Department
T-shirt. It is a part of Mayor Mike Bloomberg's new NYC
apparel to benefit the city, reports pagesix.com.
Other celebrities supporting this include Jessica
Simpson's ex husband Nick Lachey. He was seen walking
around New York in a cap in support.

Swank suffers for her roles
London, Dec 21 Two time Oscar winner Hilary Swank
puts her health on line to make her characters believable.
Swank, who has won Oscars for "Boys don't Cry" and
"Million Dollar Baby", was quoted as saying by
contactmusic.com: "I have some problems with elevated
mercury in my system. I wasn't eating meat when I was
filming 'Million Dollar Baby' but had to put on 19 pounds
of muscle. So, I ate a lot of fish.
"And for 'Boys Don't Cry', I went down to seven percent
body fat. In 'Black Dahlia', when my character dies, I hit
my arm on an old-fashioned ironing board, and I have a
scar from that.
"But how great to have that. That's what life is - you
want to get in there and play hard. The battle scars are a
reminder that you're alive and human and that you bleed."

Spears might have cheated on Federline
New York, Dec 21 Pop superstar Britney Spears might
have cheated on her now estranged husband Kevin Federline
before they split.
Spears is now dating J.R. Rotem, a friend of Federline who
produced many songs on Federline's latest album. He is now
working on Spears' comeback album. But sources say that
Spears and Rotem were involved even before she filed for
divorce, reports newsweek.com.
Another source adds that there was "definite chemistry"
and Spears waited till she filed the papers. There are
also rumours that Paris Hilton dated Rotem.
Rotem worked on Hilton's album and they dated for a while.
A source says: "It was nothing serious, just a few
hookups. I bet a million dollars that Rotem tried to keep
that a secret from Britney. Britney would probably flip
out if she knew that he'd romanced Paris first."

De Niro wants to write and direct
London, Dec 21 Movie legend Robert De Niro says he
will quit directing when he fulfils his dream of directing
a movie he has written.
De Niro has directed "A Bronx Tale" and the recent "The
Good Shepherd" starring Angelina Jolie and Matt Damon. He
has plans for three more projects, including a sequel to
"The Good Shepherd".
Contactmusic.com quoted him as saying: "I always thought
if I did five movies that would be it for me. I'd like to
finally write one and then direct it - totally. The whole
thing. Make a film.
" 'The Good Shepherd', for me, is not a film by me. I
directed it, Eric (Roth) wrote it. I had the collaboration
of everybody, all the actors."

Robin Wright Penn missed out on 'English Patient'
London, Dec 21 Actress Robin Wright Penn, the wife
of Sean Penn, had to turn down the role in "The English
Patient" because she had just given birth.
Wright Penn was director Anthony Minghella's first choice
but she had to turn the part down.
Contactmusic.com quoted her as saying: "Anthony and I had
a meeting years ago for 'The English Patient', and I
wasn't able to do it because I'd just had a baby and they
were going to North Africa for 16 weeks, which I wouldn't
do."
Wright Penn admits that Kristin Scott Thomas, who landed
the role, was perfect in the 1996 film.
She adds: "She's so great in that film - nobody could have
played that part (as well)... It all worked out in the
end."
