'The Pink Panther' Review
Film: "The Pink Panther"; Cast: Steve Martin, Kevin Kline, Beyoncé Knowles, Jean Reno, Emily Mortimer; Director: Shawn Levy; Rating: ***
Handling humour in films is not an easy job. The first few frames of "The Pink Panther", replete with done to death tricks to elicit laughter, give that impression. Steve Martin, who was at his funny best in "Father Of The Bride" (both part one and two) and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", initially doesn't look at ease playing an accident-prone, incompetent French Inspector, Jacques Clouseau. The few flaws lead to some unfunny situations. But they don't mar the otherwise hilarious film, which unfolds its comic lustre as it progresses. Martin's character grows on you, making it an enjoyable, entertaining and relaxing experience. Levy has used some interesting physical comedy between Inspector Clouseau and his secretary Nicole (Emily Mortimer), which generates comic sparks and tickles the funny bone. Clouseau's one-liners are hilarious. There are some exceptional humour sequences in this slapstick. For instance, the scene where Clouseau decides to learn the American accent and his teacher makes futile attempts to get him to pronounce "hamburger" the American way.

'Derailed' is a lesson for adulterers
By Subhash K. Jha, Indo-Asian News Service

Film: "Derailed"; Cast: Clive Owen, Jennifer Aniston, Melissa George, Vincent Cassel; Director: Mikael Hafstrom; Rating: **

For those who think adultery is fun, here is some warning from Hollywood. Forget "Fatal Attraction" - there's worse in store. As soon as you get comfy in a motel with a lady who looks like Jennifer Aniston - not surprising, since she's played by Aniston - a psycho barges in, rips of all your money, mugs you and rapes the lady. Ouch! And you can't report to the cops because your lovely and devoted wife (Melissa George) would get to know what you've been up to.
Oh, dear. There's much more horror in store for family man turned adulterer Charles Schine (Clive Owen).  The beauty of the beastly plot is that it always stays a step ahead of us. We just don't know what's in store for poor Charles. One minute the luscious Lucinda Harris (Jennifer Aniston) is un-belting his trousers, the next minute the psycho Philippe LaRoche (Vincent Cassel) was there to play the spoilsport, even as his unsuspecting wife cooks dinner in the next room.

'Syriana', a restless drama of deceit Review
Film: "Syriana"; Cast: George Clooney, Matt Damon, William Hurt, Christopher Plummer and Chris Cooper; Director: Stephen Ghaghan; Rating: ** 1/2

The thing about "Syriana" is that it is a boys' movie, not in the way, say "Ocean's Eleven" or "The Sting" were. The boys here play big games that traverse countries and continents for big bucks. And we are talking in billions.

No wonder first-time director Stephen Gaghan, who wrote the equally dense "Traffic", has cast some of Hollywood's most recognisable faces in crucial rules.

Dramatic low-budget films to dominate Oscars
Los Angeles, Contrary to the usual expensive and lavish productions, the Oscars ceremony this year is expected to be dominated by a string of low-budget dramatic films.

Of the top contenders for the Oscar glory, only "Munich" and "Memoirs of a Geisha" can be considered traditional studio products - a sign of Hollywood's mould-breaking trend this year.

"Munich" is perhaps Steven Spielberg's most independent-minded film ever, filmed on a tight budget with a tough narrative and few special effects. "Geisha", meanwhile, garnered its nominations in relatively minor categories.

That leaves the Oscar gala in Hollywood Feb 5 open for a roster of films that challenges the mainstream comfort zone more than any other selection in recent years.

The powerful gay cowboy story and Oscar frontrunner "Brokeback Mountain", racial drama "Crash" and political period piece "Good Night, and Good Luck" - all of them indicate a thumb down to Hollywood's most expensive and lavish productions like "King Kong", "War of the Worlds" and "The Chronicles of Narnia".

No wonder Hollywood wags are joking they might move the next Oscar ceremony to the Sundance Film Festival - especially since that independent film showcase is fast moving towards the mainstream.

But it's no surprise that Hollywood's artistic community plumbs for the movies that are seen as the best expression of their art.

With low-budget dramatic films dominating the Oscars this season, pundits are hailing edgy movies that are made cheaply as a sure-fire ticket to riches. While that may be true for the select few that get Oscar nominations and statues, research institute Kagan Research finds such independent- calibre dramas generally are a poor economic bet.

"Hollywood talent often makes these films because of a passion for the material," says Wade Holden, analyst with Kagan Research. "But the entire low-budget drama category doesn't have a good track record from an economic perspective."

The figures bear it out. Of all the movies at the forefront of this year's Oscars, only "Brokeback Mountain" has a chance of breaking the $100 million mark at the US box office, a figure seen as the minimum requirement for a hit movie.

Legendary US television actor Knotts dead
Washington, Legendary US television actor Don Knotts, who played the bumbling deputy Barney Fife on "The Andy Griffith Show", has died of lung cancer.

The 81-year-old Knotts died late Friday at UCLA Medical Centre in Los Angeles, his manager announced late Saturday. The slightly built Knotts became a defining icon of US television playing Fife from 1960-65, collecting an astonishing five Emmy awards for the role.

The egotistical, nervous, inept deputy was the show's comic focus, with star Griffith as Sheriff Andy Taylor becoming the straight man to Knotts. Together, they kept the peace among the indelible small-town characters in the fictional North Carolina town of Mayberry.

The Andy Griffith show continued in syndication for decades and is still aired frequently on cable television.

Griffith, a close friend of Knotts' throughout their careers, was reportedly among his last hospital visitors Friday night.

Knotts starred in a string of film comedies after gaining fame as Barney Fife, including "The Incredible Mr Limpet" in 1964, "The Ghost and Mr Chicken" in 1966 and "The Apple Dumpling Gang" in 1975.

He returned to television in 1979 as a nosy landlord on the bawdy comedy "Three's Company".

Most recently, he voiced the character of Turkey Mayor in the 2005 animated film "Chicken Little".

Cinematographer of film about carjacker carjacked
Johannesburg, A crewmember of the Oscar-nominated film "Tsotsi", which deals with the perpetrator of a car hijacking, became the victim of carjacking.

Lance Gewer, the director of photography for the South African film that has already won numerous awards, was with a female companion when the hijacking occurred in the northeastern Johannesburg suburb of Bramley, the Sunday Independent newspaper said.

The two persons were pulled out from a BMW by armed thieves and Gewer spent most of Saturday thinking he would not be able to leave the country Sunday to attend the March 5 Oscar ceremony because his passport and air ticket were in the car, according to the report.

Gewer's friend said she was afraid but said one of the young men who carjacked assured her: "Don't worry I won't kill you."

The unidentified friend said: "I guess I was in shock because at that point I asked (the robber) if he had seen the film 'Tsotsi'. He replied that he had seen it and then said: 'That is why I am so sorry to do this to you. I saw Tsotsi, it's a good film. My heart is sore for you. Please forgive me for doing this'."
