Kevin Smith considers sequel to 'Dogma'
Indo-Asian News Service

London, Dec 1 (IANS) Filmmaker Kevin Smith is reportedly working on a sequel to the movie "Dogma" and is hoping to persuade Alanis Morissette to reprise her role as god.

According to contactmusic.com, Smith has posted a blog on his website explaining that he wants to revisit the 1999 movie which starred Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. He says that he is inspired by events that have transpired since the Sep 11 terror attacks on the US.

He says: "The worst terrorist attack on American soil was religiously bent. In the wake of said attack, the leader of the Free World (US president George W. Bush) touted himself as pretty damned Christian.

"In the last election, rather than a quagmire war abroad, the big issue was whether or not gay marriage was moral. Back when I made 'Dogma', I always maintained that another movie about religion wouldn't be forthcoming, as 'Dogma' was the product of 28 years of religious and spiritual meditation, and I'd kinda shot my wad on the subject."

He adds: "Now? I think I might have more to say. And, yes, the Last Scion would be at the epicenter (sic) of it. And she'd have to be played by Alanis. And we'd need a bigger budget - because the entire third act would be the Apocalypse."

Indo-Asian News Service

London, Dec 1 (IANS) Actress Rosanne Barr has announced that the world will end in July.

"But I want people to look at the bright side, 'cause there (are) some good things about the world ending. For instance, all those skinny ladies that do yoga and exercise and have no body fat and stuff: when the food supply dwindles they'll be dead first within two weeks. Sweet!"

She adds: "It will be all over and they'll fall over dead to the ground and I, because of my large body mass, will be stepping over their skeletal remains and the silicone t*t bags and the collagen lips and the pitiful little puddles of Botox as I make my way to Canada to find more food.

"There are three safe places: Canada, the spaceship with Tom Cruise and Hershey, Pennsylvania. That's what the Bible says."

Character movies lead in race for best European film
DPA

Berlin, Dec 2 (DPA) Movies that explore the character of a dissipated actor and a Danish drifter are front-runners this Saturday to win the European Film Prize, which is often dubbed Europe's answer to the Oscars.

One of the frontrunners was German director Wim Wenders' "Don't Come Knocking," a story of a selfish Western movie star, whose life takes a fresh turn when he learns he may have an illegitimate child.

"Brothers," a Danish film directed by Susanne Bier, is about a drifter who takes the place of his army officer brother who has gone missing in Afghanistan. The two movies are among six nominated for the award as best European film.

Other nominations are Marc Rothemund's dark German movie "Sophie Scholl - The Last Days", which is about a German schoolgirl who stood up to the Nazis in 1943; Michael Haneke's "Cache"; Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne's "L'Enfant" and "My Summer of Love" by Pawel Pawlikowski.

The winners are to be announced at a gala ceremony for some 1,200 guests in Berlin hosted by the European Academy of Film.

Nominees for best male actor include Daniel Auteuil in "Cache", Jeremie Renier in "L'Enfant" and Ulrich Thomsen in "Brothers".

Julia Jentsch has been nominated as best actress for her leading role in "Sophie Scholl", as has Juliette Binoche for "Cache", Connie Nielsen for "Brothers" and Natalie Press for Britain's "My Summer of Love".

Chinese Oscar nominee film to turn Broadway musical
Xinhua

Beijing, Dec 2 (Xinhua) "The Promise," a Chinese Oscar nominee movie, will be adapted to a Broadway musical, the movie's producer Chen Hong said.

Chen Hong, who made the movie with her husband director Chen Kaige, claimed the fairy world created in her movie was "without territorial boundary" and thus also fitted in well with a musical.

Chen Kaige was also nominated for the Oscars in 1993 in the best foreign film category for his film "Farewell My Concubine".

"Our cooperation with Broadway will, I believe, write down a page in the world cultural exchange history," Chen Hong said Thursday without naming the Broadway partner.

"The Promise" will debut on Dec 12 in Beijing and be released around the globe three days later.

The movie features a top-grade Asian cast that includes stars from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan.

"The Promise" was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and has now been recommended as the only Chinese mainland movie to compete for the Oscar award for the best foreign language film.

Anger in Russia over Elton John's gay wedding plans
DPA

Moscow, Dec 2 (DPA) Plans of Sir Elton John and partner David Furnish to wed in a St. Petersburg palace this month have sparked protests in the Russian parliament, the media reported Friday.

At a ceremony thought to be set for Dec 21, the day civil partnerships between gay couples become legal in Britain, pop star John will formalise his 12-year relationship with the Canadian-born filmmaker.

In a letter of protest forwarded to the Kremlin and the culture ministry, Nikolai Kuryanovich of the Duma's nationalist LDPR faction demanded steps "to prevent the defilement of the Konstantin Palace or any other important architectural memorials in Russia".

But a spokeswoman for the baroque palace outside the northern city dismissed reports of the service as a "bad joke".

Control of the premises by the Kremlin administration precluded such events, she said.

Same-sex marriage is not legal in Russia, but there is no law specifically banning it.

In February the country's supreme court rejected a plea by a gay politician and his journalist partner seeking amendments to the family code to allow same-sex marriages.

Homosexuality was illegal under the old Soviet regime, but was de-criminalised in 1993.
