Watson had turned down 'Amelie' role
Indo-Asian News Service
London, Sep 26 (IANS) The mega hit French movie "Amelie" was originally written for British actress Emily Watson but she turned down the role because she couldn't speak French.
According to contactmusic.com, the director Jean-Pierre Juenet had felt sure that Watson could master the language when he created the character for the 2001 film.
Watson said: "He (Jeunet) wanted someone to speak in English and French... so I said no."
She added: "'Amelie' launched Audrey Tautou, and she is a superstar now, which is fantastic. The same thing happened to me - Helena Bonham Carter was going to do 'Breaking The Waves' and she dropped out, and there was my opportunity."
