Puneet charisma fails to save 'Namma Basava'
By R.G. Vijayasarathy, Indo-Asian News Service

Film: "Namma Basava"; Cast: Puneet Raj Kumar, Gauri, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Sudharani, Avinash, Tara, Riyaz Khan; Producers: Dattu, Veera Shankar, Sathya Kiran; Director: Veera Shankar; Music director: Guru Kiran.
Puneet Raj Kumar has carved out a niche for himself with his action sequences and dances. His sixth film "Namma Basava", directed by Veera Shankar, capitalises on these strengths of the star. But the film suffers on account of a weak script and lack of freshness.
The major attraction of the film remains Puneet's charisma, while the newly introduced Gauri, who had already starred in the Telugu film "Bunny", fails to make an impression.
"Namma Basava" does not have any new thing to offer with a story that has been told several times earlier. Even the narration lacks a distinctive style. The dialogues are pedestrian.
The Kannada film audience has shown lot of maturity these days by accepting good films with smaller stars.
"Deadly Soma" is a recent example. But, with a top star like Puneet around, it would have been better for Shankar to have done some homework in preparing his script.
Puneet plays the role of Basava, a happy-go-lucky boy who falls in love with Gauri at first sight. But he is always at loggerheads with her father who mistakes him for a street rowdy. Basava then pretends to be a police official on hunt for criminals.
Gauri comes to know that Basava had lied to her. She is pressurised to marry the grandson of a city don. How Basava wins the heart of Gauri and fights out the villains form the rest of the story.
Telugu actor Srinivasa Rao gives a good performance as the villain. The national award winner Tara also excels in a brief role. Sudharani and Avinash have nothing much to offer.
The music by Guru Kiran is also not on a high note.
