Tamil film producers to sue Sun Network

Chennai, Feb 22 (IANS) The Tamil Film Producers' Council has decided to sue the Sun Television Network for Rs.20 billion for alleged misuse of film clippings. The council has 200-odd members.

Council secretary A.L. Azhagappan said in a press statement: "For the past 12 years, the Sun TV Network (comprising 14 TV channels in four South Indian states) has been airing our trailers, songs and clippings on various programmes on their channels."
He added: "The Tamil channels, Sun TV, KTV, Sun Music and Suriyan FM have been telecasting film-based programmes free of cost for more than a decade. This has resulted in a loss of Rs.20 billion to producers, distributors, exhibitors and the Film Employees Federation of South India."
The council action came following complaints from distributors that collections from star-studded Pongal time releases were low because of the constant airing of new songs on television, despite council guidelines in force for the last two years.
"Only the Sun Network has refused to abide by our guidelines and they continue to misuse the rights given to Indian channels," producer Kayaar told the media.
The council said that Sun Network has been claiming 99-year rights over clippings user rights bought for just 90 days.
Television networks like the Sun had bought only the Indian rights but aired songs with visuals, trailers and clippings on channels it has in the US, Australia, Singapore Malaysia, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
Sun Network will have to pay Rs.5 million daily for violation, the council has said.
The council has also objected to a programme called "Thirai Vimarsanam" (Film Review) where Sun channels show clippings from films, along with the review.
According to the council, these channels did not have satellite rights either for such telecasts. KTV, for example, said the council, allowed cable operators to download songs and clippings.
A show-cause notice has also been issued to the producers of new films who give Sun Network the clips of their new releases.
The Sun Television Network belongs to Kalanithi Maran, brother of Communications Minister Dayanidhi
Maran.
