Tamil producer threatens 'dharna' against Kannada star
By R.G. Vijayasarathy, Indo-Asian News Service
Bangalore, Oct 14 (IANS) Tamil film producer V.A. Durai has threatened to stage a sit-in outside Kannada film actor Sudeep's home if the star does not give a 'call sheet' for his film or return the advance payment.
Durai has already complained to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce in this regard. Besides, the KFCC has also received a letter from the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce asking it to look into the complaint.
Sources say that KFCC has advised Sudeep to either return the advance or give Durai the 'call sheet' as promised.
Durai is the producer of the Vikram-Surya-Laila starrer "Pithamagan" directed by Bala, which won National Awards for best regional film as well as for best actor for Vikram.
Durai had approached Sudeep with an offer to do Vikram's role in the Kannada remake of "Pithamagan". Another Kannada actor, Ram Kumar, was selected for the role played by Surya.
Sudeep agreed to do the film and received a token advance of Rs.300,000. Meanwhile he accepted too many films and was not in a position to give a 'call sheet' for Durai.
A desperate Durai took Ram Kumar with him to Sudeep's house to plead his case. Sudeep said he was not in a position to return the advance amount immediately. It was then that a frustrated Durai threatened a 'dharna'.
Durai had not made any profits from "Pithamagan" and his next film "Gajendra", directed by Suresh Krishna, was a box office disaster. Since the Kannada project was not taking off, he had to start another film immediately to meet his commitments.
