Diwali release may decide Dhanush's fate
By Chitra Prakash, From Indo-Asian News Service
Chennai, Nov 1 (IANS) Cinema buffs here await a Diwali release that may decide the fate of Dhanush, an actor with a difference.
The conspicuously lean Dhanush may come of age at last as an actor, if "Adhu Oru Kanaakkaalam" that hit the screen Tuesday sees box-office success.
Dhanush started with a string of successes playing adolescent roles that offered a refreshing change for audiences tired of over-aged stars in unfittingly youthful attire and action in film after film.
He made his well-noticed debut in "Thulluvadho Ilamai", as one of a group of runaway school kids. He shot to near-stardom with "Kaadhal Kondein", playing an obsessed adolescent lover, opposite Sonia Agarwal. "Thiruda Thirudi", in which he played an unemployed youth, was a hit too.
A series of flops followed. "Pudukkottaiyilirunthu Saravanan", about a village boy in a city, set the trend. The failure of "Sullan", released after the then 22-year-old actor's marriage to Tamil superstar Rajnikant's daughter Aishwarya, was a serious setback.
The title of the Diwali release, which means "That Was a Dream Time", almost sounds nostalgic about the initial phase of Dhanush's career.
Veteran filmmaker and camera wizard Balu Mahendra directs the film, with Priyamani as the leading lady.
