'Aaru' a temporary topper among Tamil films
By Aparna Nath, Indo-Asian News Service
Chennai, Dec 18 (IANS) To follow up the stupendous success of
"Ghajini" is difficult and Surya understands this well. Still, his new action film
"Aaru" has had a good opening all over Tamil Nadu. But it is highly unlikely that it will be a comparable hit.
The top five Tamil films are:

1. "Aaru" (Director: Hari): "Aaru" is the first film made by director Saran's production house. Though Saran cannot claim to have made sensitive films, this one takes the cake for mindless and meaningless violence. If the film had a good opening, it is only because of the success of
"Ghajini", Surya's last film, which is all about blood, gore and gutter language.
2. "Thavamayi Thavamirundu" (Dir: Cheran):
"Thavamayi Thavamirundu" can be termed the best Tamil film of the year. Sensitive, touching and honest, this is how one can describe the film. Raj Kiran as Cheran's father has given a mind-blowing performance, arguably the best of 2005. The only drawback about the film is its length, it's all of three hours and 22 minutes!
3. "Kanda Naal Muthal" (Dir:
Priya): Priya will no longer be described as Mani Ratnam's assistant, she will hereafter be known as the director of "Kanda Naal
Muthal". Kudos to Prakash Raj also for having agreed to produce such a sweet little film sans vulgarity and violence. It is a neat film for the entire family. And its success shows there are viewers to patronise such ventures.
4. "Sandakozhi" (Dir: Lingusamy): The film has Vishal of
"Chellame" as the hero and Meera Jasmine as the heroine. It's a fast paced action film and in all likelihood, it will be a success.
5. "ABCD" (Dir: Saravana Subbiah): The slow success of
"ABCD" also shows that good films with a good story will ultimately succeed. Saravana Subbiah's previous film was the Ajith-starrer "Citizen", an action film that failed miserably at the box office.
"ABCD", a film full of emotions, has attracted female audience a lot and that is the reason for the film's success, though only a moderate
one.
