Santosh Sivan goes global in 2007
By Sanu George,
Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 23 Filmmaker Santosh Sivan has an
exciting year ahead of him as he has several prestigious
international projects, including one on AIDS, lined up for
2007.
"First I have a film on AIDS for the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation. Mira Nair, Kamal Hassan, Vishal Bharadwaj and myself
will shoot four 12-minutes films on AIDS," Sivan told IANS in an
interview.
Apart from that, the National Award winning director will be
busy with his first movie for BBC Films based on Afghanistan
war.
"It is a fiction and is given a working title - 'Wedding Party'.
Right now, work on script is on. The shooting will begin in
2007," said Sivan, who was at his home here to attend the fourth
death anniversary of his mother.
And then he has "World According to Gopalakrishnan", which has
been close to his heart for a long time. The film, parts of
which have already been shot in three countries, will be made in
Malayalam and English.
"I am producing and directing it. I have already shot in Japan,
Africa and America. Since Kerala plays a major role in the film,
so rest of the shooting will take place in Palakkad in March
next year," said Sivan.
The director said the film would not have any stars and would
see the entry of fresh faces.
"This is basically a tongue in cheek film. Most of the cast will
comprise of the new faces. The central character, Gopalakrishnan,
is an innocent villager who lives in a village in Kerala. It
would have no commercial ingredients," said Sivan.
In the film Gopalakrishnan's life undergoes a massive
transformation with the arrival of a person from the US. He is
impressed with Gopalakrishnan and very soon starts experimenting
on him. The things get worse when the experiments begin to fail
and Gopalakrishnan's life becomes miserable.
"To add colour to the film I could have easily roped in a star
to play Gopalakrishnan, but I felt audiences would prefer fresh
face. Such films kindle my thoughts and provide me enough
ammunition to keep going. But I can afford such films only if I
work for others," said Sivan, who added that he has a major
Bollywood project also next year.
His Hollywood venture "Road To The Sky", entirely shot in
Kerala, is also slated for release next year. Echo Lake
Productions of Los Angeles, Adirondack Pictures of New York and
Sivan's productions company have jointly produced it.
Set in the 1940s, in the backdrop of the freedom struggle, the
movie focuses on the attempts made by the English to create
inroads into the spice heartland of Kerala.
Apart from Indian actors, the film also has American actors such
as William Jaudon, Jennifer Ryan and William Roache.
