Mammootty believes in reinventing
his characters
Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 1Ace Malayalam actor Mammootty
said he was able to play different roles over the years as he
continuously reinvented his characters.
"The best example of this is my latest film 'Karuthupakshigal'.
But this film has not brought in the crowds I had expected. The
film and my character provide a lot of emotional entertainment.
The response could have been better," the veteran actor said at
a press conference here Friday.
Mammootty's forthcoming films
include "Palunku" directed by Blessy, "Orae Kadal" by
Shyamaprasad, Renjith's "Kaioppu" and "Pazhassi Raja" by
Hariharan. The actor says most of these films would fit into the
mould of emotional cinema.
Asked why he continued acting with younger heroines despite his
age, Mammootty replied: "How old is your wife? Isn't she younger
to you? See, this is our culture and I don't have any problem."
"You can't throw us out too soon. We will be around for more,"
he added.
The star, when asked why he hadn't done any films with actor
Mohanlal in recent times, said both of them belonged to a
different class altogether.
"If we are to work together again, it should be in an epic film
which should be etched into the memory of viewers for a long
time. I am told that the film to be produced by the Association
of Malayalam Movie Artists will include both of us," he said.
Mammootty, who has acted in over 300 films, said the
ongoing International Film Festival of India (IIFI) at Goa had
failed to promote regional films. "The festival is being
organised basically to make money.
"They are making a lot of money and Bollywood is being sold very
well. It is sad that the event is being marketed by an event management
company."
Mammootty stressed that the Malayalam film industry
needed to actively promote its films on a national level.
"We have many talented directors but they are still to find a
place in the national scenario because of several limitations.
We have to promote our films nationally. To make a more serious
mark, the need of the hour is to make more meaningful cinema
here," the superstar said.
