'Ashok' script lets down NTR
Junior
By B. Anuradha, Indo-Asian News Service Rating: ***
Film: "Ashok"; Cast: NTR Junior, Sameera Reddy, Prakash Raj,
Sonu Sood, Rajiv Kanakala, Vadivukarasu and Venu Madhav;
Director: Surendra Reddy; Producer: Valluripalli Ramesh; Music:
Mani Sharma
Even after duds like "Naa Alludu" and "Narasimhudu", NTR Junior
chose yet another film with an insipid plot for his comeback
bid. But director Surendra Reddy does
manage to make "Ashok" moderately entertaining.
The character of NTR Junior is patterned along Sunny Deol's
character in "Ziddi". Impressive in dance and action sequences,
NTR Junior still needs the right script to regain his stardom.
For glamour girl Sameera Reddy, too, this flick follows two
flops - "Narasimhudu" and "Jai Chiranjeeva". Timid dubbing by
Sunitha makes her role less appealing. But
Sameera's dancing skills do deserve some applause.
Bollywood actor Sonu Sood is adequate as a gangster, while
Prakash Raj yet again displays class. Comedians Venu Madhav and
Rajiv do their bit with élan.
Producer Valluripalli Ramesh, known for making romantic films
like "Valliddaru Ishtapaddaru", moves to star-centric films with
"Ashok".
The USP of this action flick consists in cinematographer Senthil
Kumar's innovative angles and breathtaking lighting.
However, composer Mani Sharma fails to come up with any musical
hits this time.
