Salman and team got a rude shock in London
By Subhash K. Jha, Indo-Asian News Service
Mumbai, June 16 (IANS) Going by the dismal fate of the latest Rock Stars concert abroad, it may be a long time before any organiser or Bollywood celebrity dares venture into a world tour.
The last stop for the Rock Stars entourage - Salman Khan, John Abraham, Mallika Sherawat, Shahid Kapur and Kareena Kapoor - last week turned out to be a nightmare that the stars aren't likely to forget.
"There was almost nil attendance," a source told IANS.
"The show at Wembley in London had to be cancelled because there was hardly anyone there to see our so-called Rock Stars. In all, 500-600 people turned up to watch our great entourage. You should have seen the expression on their faces.
"On the evening before at Birmingham the attendance was hardly any better. There were around 1,500 people in all," the source added.
"Fortunately, the show at Birmingham didn't have to be cancelled. But what happened at Wembley has sobered and cautioned our entire Bollywood fraternity. I don't think the stars are likely to go on concert tours for a long, long time to come."
The worst blow was yet to come. Sahara India had acquired TV filming rights of the cancelled concert.
"Their expensive equipment and large crew had to return without any footage. There's a lot of financial accounting to be done. The organisers haven't even started counting their losses in Britain as yet," said the source.
So is it a no-no for Bollywood concerts abroad?
"For others stars? Yes, they are unlikely to go for a long time after this experience," said the source. "But if it's a concert featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai, tickets will sell like hot cakes anytime.
"Salman and John returned to Mumbai Monday. Shahid and Kareena are expected back later during the week."
Salman bails out Walia and Rockstar
Bollywood heartthrob Salman Khan has helped pull off the Rockstar series in the US and Canada.
The series had received a lukewarm response "because the euphoria and excitement that was once prevalent about these shows has died down with too many such shows making the rounds," said Bunty Walia, one of the three organisers of the show.
Walia is however not disillusioned by its mediocre performance, reports Bollywood Trade. He says Salman's tremendous fan following gave the series a boost whenever he made his appearance on stage.
Walia is now looking forward to the next and final round, scheduled for June 9, 10 and 11 in Amsterdam and Birmingham.
"There's a great anticipation in these places for the concerts and they could just be a total sell-out," he says.
Meanwhile, he has decided to lie low on the production front before he starts his next film with director Apoorva Lakhia.
"That will happen in due course. I am also looking at other possibilities and tie-ups with other directors," he says.
Suchitra Pillai helps Salman Khan fall in love
IANS
Former VJ-turned-actress Suchitra Pillai, best remembered as Saif Ali Khan's pesky girl friend in "Dil Chahta Hai", now plays Salman Khan's best friend in "Marigold" who helps him in finding true love.
"Marigold" is a romantic film, which stars Hollywood actress Ali Larter (of "Final Destination" and "Legally Blonde" fame) and Salman who plays a choreographer, reports Bollywood Trade.
" 'Marigold' is a Hollywood film where I play Salman's best friend. I befriend Ali (the actress), help her find a job and it is through me that the two fall in love. Basically, I play this happy-go-lucky character in the film," said Suchitra.
Besides films, Suchitra's first song "Yaara" that she recorded for her solo music album is making news.
"I just played this song when we were shooting for 'Marigold'. My director Willard Carroll liked the song and decided to use it in the background. It is a situational song shot in the bar where Nandana Sen and Ali are discussing Salman in the film."
Suchitra has quite a few films in her kitty - "Shiva", "Pyaar Ke Side Effects", "Postcard" and "Karkash".
"I am eagerly awaiting the release of all my films. I play Mohit Ahlawat's sister-in-law in 'Shiva' who is kind of irritating and has grey shades to her character."
Salman trying to make up for lost time
By Subhash K. Jha, Indo-Asian News Service
Mumbai, April 18 (IANS) Contrary to speculation in the press about
Salman Khan's post-incarceration activities, the star hasn't taken a holiday after his Jodhpur jail stint.
"I think bhai has rested enough in Jodhpur," joked Salman's younger brother Sohail Khan.
"He is eager to get back to work. He is concerned about the delay in the Rock Stars concerts and is making every effort to get his schedule back on track," Sohail told IANS.
Rather than rest, Salman has been busy rehearsing rigorously for Rock Stars - as much as six hours every day - since his release on bail and return from Jodhpur where he had been kept in judicial custody for three days after being convicted for poaching a chinkara deer.
"It's almost like a 'junoon' (obsession) for bhai. This feeling of commitment going awry is troubling him," said Sohail.
In fact, Salman will be doing his level best to make up for lost time. Next month when he goes into the Rock Stars concerts he will also be shooting for David Dhawan's "Partner" with Govinda, Katrina Kaif and Lara Dutta, which is a home production.
"The schedules for the concerts have now been worked out. The first five shows that were supposed to happen in April have now been moved to the end of the tour, that's all. During weekends he'll be performing at the concerts. Weekdays he'll be shooting for 'Partner'."
The "Partner" crew will shoot with Salman in Canada wherever it is convenient for him to fly down. "We'll first shoot with him in Vancouver and then later in Toronto when the concerts would be closer to that part of Canada."
This must be the first instance of a whole crew following an actor to shoot wherever convenient for him! The work permit that Salman has been granted after the bail is most likely to be extended beyond June.
"In fact, between July and December bhai shoots for just one month in India. The rest of the schedules are all abroad."
"We are just happy to have Salman bhai back. Mom is now back at home, completely recovered."
About the news report that Salman wants the toilets in the Jodhpur jail to be renovated, Sohail said: "Yes, it's true. Bhai is keen to do what he can for the inmates. He has seen the conditions they live in.
"He even wants to install ceiling fans in the prison. But the authorities feel that would be excessive. So, yes, the toilet renovations are definitely happening."
